Position Overview

As a Sr. Industrial Hygienist in the IOSHA Division, you will work under the supervision of the Health Bureau Chief at our central office near Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa. You will work together with program managers and other enforcement inspectors to eliminate workplace hazards in facilities across the state.

Responsibilities

You will be an integral member of our team, providing leadership and guidance to the department in support of the agency's operations by:

  • Conducts regulatory inspections at various work sites across the state to ensure compliance with state and federal safety and health codes.

  • Performs on-site sampling of exposed personnel to chemical, physical or air borne hazards.

  • Interviews affected staff to determine workplace exposure and level of training.

  • Collects all relevant data for entry into the OSHA Information System utilized for casefile formation and management.

  • Proposes citations and penalties to identify and eliminate hazards.

  • Evaluates and approves the abatement efforts submitted by employers.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in industrial hygiene, chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, environmental health, occupational safety, chemistry, physics, or a biological science, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in industrial hygiene compliance, testing, or monitoring.

2) Five years of full-time work experience as a safety officer in an industrial or construction setting, which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace Senior Industrial Hygienist Class Code: 00674 4 health and safety with at least one of those years working with industrial hygiene compliance, testing, or monitoring.

3) A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in industrial hygiene, chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, environmental health, occupational safety, chemistry, physics, or a biological science equals one year of full-time experience.

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Safety Health Consultant.
