This position offers outsize leverage on the mission to deliver affordable & exhilarating vehicles that accelerate Earth's transition to sustainable energy! Our vertically-integrated program (from refining to recycling\u2014 electrode thru vehicle\u2014 hardware + software) uniquely enables full-stack engineering for extreme speed, precision and volume, leveraging troves of internal data, and super-aligned technical partners that carry years of execution pedigree and mass-production wisdom.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and grow team of 15+ design engineers; own new & derivative versions of Tesla's in-house 46x cell from initial requirements, through B~C phase development, to factory launch
  • Define & drive execution of bold projects that optimize cost / performance and neutralize vexing tradeoffs spanning product + factory
  • Foster respect & seamless collaboration with partner teams (Pack, Vehicle, Programs, Manufacturing, Process, Quality, NPI, Qualification, Supply Chain, CAE) to overcome multi-dimensional technical and business challenges
  • Establish design tools, protocols, workflows, and documentation that improve efficiency & rigor
  • Coordinate & drive response to emergent issues (validation, factory, supply, etc.)
  • Convert leadership direction into results; refine updates, represent team at prog / exec level
  • Recruit / develop world-class talent, manage performance, and nurture team culture
  • Set ambitious & quantitative OKRs, inspire employees, maintain high standard of work, justify resources and win leadership alignment
  • Stay in sync with San Diego & Austin peer managers to progressively elevate design team practices and streamline handoffs between our development & production sites
  • Master cell technology and the systems that build it

What You'll Bring

  • On-site in Fremont, California
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related specialization or equivalent experience
  • 8 years of technical experience, minimum 4 years demonstrated leadership of other engineers
  • Sharp engineering 1st principles (in mechanics & heat transfer especially) plus a quantitative mindset, and track record of successfully launched products
  • Practiced in concept generation, CAD, tolerancing (GD&T), statistical analysis, DFM, DFMEA
  • Background in design for high-volume & automated precision manufacturing processes
  • Exceptional technical communication (live reporting, written form, and presentation of data)
  • Natural inclination to organize / motivate teams of people and improve workflows
  • Appetite for extreme ownership, hard work, and continuous improvement. We are resilient and deliver in the face of fast timelines, shifting requirements, and concurrent demands
