DescriptionAmazon Web Services is seeking a Sr. Electrical Engineer to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint.Engineers at Amazon design resilient, cost‑effective electrical distribution systems that achieve world class uptime for our customers. Engineers justify and communicate technical decisions to senior management, driving continuous improvements with their designs. As an engineer you have the ability to drive change and define the systems our customers rely on.We are looking for substation engineers with hands‑on electrical design experience. If you can design a substation and understand the critical needs of a data center and its relationship to substation engineering, you may be a good fit.As part of our expansion team, you will be responsible for taking designs from concept to permit and construction documents, defining critical equipment specifications, approving submittals, and supporting construction from site selection through commissioning and turnover. You will be a subject‑matter expert in electrical engineering, support learning opportunities, and focus on employee development.Travel to our Seattle head office and other sites is required (up to 20% of your time). International support and some international travel may be necessary.ResponsibilitiesLead within the group and across internal and external teams that support the data center.Collaborate with internal teams to understand user requirements.Participate in site selection reviews.Develop data center substation electrical designs and collaborate with other disciplines to create construction document sets.Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements and stay within budget.Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment.Work with local utilities to understand and define site utility requirements.Ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.Review and approve equipment submittals.Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.Work with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.Manage concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.Visit sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations, electrical system audits and startup as needed.Bring creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions to the team.About the teamAWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. The HV/MV Design Engineering team designs high‑voltage and medium‑voltage electrical infrastructure that powers AWS data centers worldwide.Basic Qualifications6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities (data centers, power generation, or oil and gas).Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.Experience with design or construction administration of a variety of electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage.Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or 12+ years of related electrical experience including a minimum of 5 years of substation design experience.Cumulative 7+ years of industrial or commercial electrical design experience.4+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.Preferred Qualifications3+ years of experience directly related to substation design supporting data center or mission‑critical facilities.Professional Engineering License.Excellent understanding of the National Electrical Code.Solid understanding of critical data center electrical equipment.Leadership and problem‑solving skills.Highly motivated and dependable.Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment/construction.Creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.Strong business case analysis skills and ability to present justifications to management.Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and commitment to high quality standards.Detailed understanding of UPS, diesel generators, switchgear, power distribution units, VFDs, and automatic/static transfer switches.Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.Negotiation and management skills with consultants in design and project execution.Experience with fast‑track design/build projects and multiple significant upgrade projects.Experience with large‑scale technical operations or compute farms.Knowledge of building codes and regulations, including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.Equal Employment Opportunity StatementAmazon is an equal‑opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.Salary and BenefitsThe base salary range for this position is listed below.
