Job Description:
Under direction, plans, organizes, supervises, and teaches fundamental skills and drills to boys and girls ages 5-18.
Essential Functions:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.
- Designs and implements drills for practices, workouts and training.
- Works independently teaching sport relevant skills to participants of various ability levels.
- Meets for 60 minutes per age group once or twice per week for eight weeks.
- Sets up and takes down equipment as needed (indoors or outdoors depending on the sport).
- Monitors participant attendance against rosters to ensure all payments are received.
- Notifies supervisor and/or students of class cancellations (weather or personal).
- Assists supervisor in evaluating the class and making recommendations for improvement.
- Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
- Identifies and reports any hazards.
- Responds to emergency situations as required; maintains and forwards accurate accident and incident reports to supervisor.
- Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
- Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.
- Attends trainings and meetings as required.
- Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
- May be required to work weekends and holidays.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Requires High School Diploma or GED.
- Two or more seasons experience as a participant or coach in the specific sport required.
- Advanced collegiate level experience (playing or coaching), or advanced certifications in the specified sport is strongly preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Concussion Recognition Training certificates, or the ability to obtain all within 30 days of hire.
- May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.
- Knowledge of the specific sport that is being taught.
- Knowledge of coaching the specific sport that is being taught to participants of all abilities.
- Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
- Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
- Skill in instructing and demonstrating fundamental sports skills to participants of all abilities.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
- Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.
- Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions.
- This position is mostly light work; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

- Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
