QUALIFICATIONS
- Tennessee certification as Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant-passed Praxis
- Tennessee teaching license for Speech/Language Teacher
REPORTS TO
- Director of Special Education
JOB GOALS
- To help reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interferes with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
- Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of students with speech and hearing deficits.
- Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
- Provides screening to identify students with speech and language impairments at regular intervals and at specified levels.
- Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
- Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language deficits.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
- Provides information, support, consultation, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
- Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
- Maintains lists of screened, referred, and eligible students, as well as directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
- Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lifting of objects that may exceed 40 pounds.
- Carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Carrying and setting up testing equipment and materials.
- Other physical demands may be required as needed.
