QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tennessee certification as Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant-passed Praxis
  • Tennessee teaching license for Speech/Language Teacher

REPORTS TO

  • Director of Special Education

JOB GOALS

  • To help reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interferes with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  • Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of students with speech and hearing deficits.
  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
  • Provides screening to identify students with speech and language impairments at regular intervals and at specified levels.
  • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
  • Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language deficits.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
  • Provides information, support, consultation, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
  • Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
  • Maintains lists of screened, referred, and eligible students, as well as directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting of objects that may exceed 40 pounds.
  • Carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Carrying and setting up testing equipment and materials.
  • Other physical demands may be required as needed.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Ten-month year.
  • Salary and work year to be established by Board.

EVALUATION

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
