Job Description

Essential Elements

GROSSMONT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT C-14 HUMAN RESOURCES

Speech Therapist

Primary Function: Oversee Speech and Hearing Programs in the District

Directly Responsible to: Director Special Education

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Personnel: a. Resource person to Director of Special Education in interviewing prospective speech and hearing therapists for the district. b. Consults with Director of Special Education on interview evaluations. c. Plans work schedules for speech and hearing therapists with Director of Special Education. d. Establishes policies and procedures for speech and hearing services and makes revisions when necessary. e. Responsible for devising forms used by speech and hearing therapists. f. Distributes materials to staff.

  2. Student Personnel: a. Screens for Speech and hearing cases in schools according to need. b. Identifies students with speech and hearing defects from referrals submitted by schools in the district. c. Makes a thorough assessment of disorders with continued on-going assessment after enrollment into speech and hearing program. d. Gives appropriate individual and group therapy to identified cases. e. Assigns time and place for therapy in conjunction with the Director of Special Education. f. Maintains adequate records and progress reports on all students in the caseload and those on a waiting list. g. Contacts parents through letter or phone contact regarding students defects and gains permission for therapy. Follow-up with parent conference. h. Attends diagnostic staffings regarding students with speech and hearing defects. i. Calls on administrators to organize staffings of students in therapy needing special staff attention.

  3. Accounting: a. Keeps account of daily attendance of students enrolled in therapy. b. Sends monthly report to accounting department and Director of students enrolled and average daily attendance. c. Transmits yearly report to State Department of Education on numbers, types of cases serviced, and other requested information.

  4. Coordination: a. Within District: i. Attends department head meetings and transmits information to other speech and hearing therapists. ii. Consults with teachers, administrators, nurses, psychologists, and others concerned with the welfare of the student. iii. Coordinates the speech and hearing program in each school so that all school personnel are well aware of the objectives of the program. b. Within County: i. Attends county meetings related to the field of speech and hearing and transmits information back to district. ii. Keeps lines of communication open to the speech therapists in the area schools feeding students into the districts high schools to assure on-going therapy. c. Within Community: i. Refers to local agencies for further information and help for students. ii. Talks to local parent groups or other community groups when asked to describe speech and hearing services offered by the district.

  5. Budget: a. Attends meetings regarding budget. b. Orders and purchases items and equipment needs. c. Plans for future needs with other staff members. d. Maintains files for purchases and plans. e. Keeps accurate account of all books, equipment, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Appropriate California credential authorizing services as a speech therapist.

The Grossmont Union High School District is a suburban high school district encompassing 470 square miles in the eastern portion of San Diego County.
