This posting is for instructors at Carpenter Recreation Center and Trail Winds Recreation. Under specified supervision, teaches specialty fitness classes. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Specialty Fitness Instructor I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Specialty Fitness Instructor I: Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level non-certified classification in the Specialty Fitness Instructor series. Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience. Specialty Fitness Instructor II: Under direction, this is the journey-level certified classification in the Specialty Fitness Instructor series and is distinguished from level I by certification. Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Assists with setup, preparation and planning of specialty fitness classes. Instructs specialty fitness classes. Provides appropriate music for classes. Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports. Communicates and enforces facility and class policies and procedures. Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants to answer questions and resolve problems. Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned. QualificationsEducation/Experience:Specialty Fitness Instructor I: Requires six months of experience in teaching specified group specialty fitness class. Must be at least 18 years of age. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Specialty Fitness Instructor II: Requires eighteen (18) months of experience in teaching specified group specialty fitness class. Six months of Thornton teaching experience preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Licensing/Certification Requirements:Specialty Fitness Instructor I: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire required. Certification in specified specialty fitness class from an accredited organization or Group Exercise or Personal Training Certification from an accredited institution (AFAA, ACSM, NASM, ACE, etc.) to teach class formats that do not have a certification preferred. May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires. Specialty Fitness Instructor II: In addition to the above requirements: Group Exercise or Personal Training Certification from an accredited institution (AFAA, ACSM, NASM, ACE, etc.). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department. Knowledge of basic fitness instruction for specified specialty fitness class. Skill in performing the specified specialty fitness class exercises for the duration of the class. Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities. Ability to effectively lead and coordinate specialty fitness classes. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures. Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations. Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public. Ability to promote and provide quality specialty classes. Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations. Physical and Mental Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity, and be able to repetitively lift 50 pounds. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee must be able to physically demonstrate and participate in all fitness exercises, for the duration of the class session, each time it is conducted. Testing Procedures Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
