Join the home for entrepreneurs!The Specialist Controls Engineer serves as a senior technical resource responsible for defining control system architecture, leading complex automation programs, and driving standardization across multiple material handling projects. This role combines technical strategy, cross-functional collaboration, and organizational impact. The Specialist Controls Engineer provides technical oversight and mentorship, ensuring scalable, high-quality control system solutions that meet customer, operational, and financial objectives.Responsibilities Define and maintain control system architecture, standards, and best practices, including development of reusable code libraries, templates, and modular design approachesLead the design, development, deployment, and commissioning of complex PLC and HMI systems for material handling applicationsProvide technical oversight and lead design reviews for large-scale and high-risk projects, ensuring robust system integration across controls, interfaces, and third-party equipmentLead controls engineering scope across multiple concurrent projects or programs, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery, including risk identification and mitigationSupport ROM estimates, proposals, and technical solution development, including resource planning and workload allocationOversee system validation, integration testing, and site acceptance testing (SAT), ensuring adherence to quality, testing, and documentation standardsDrive improvements in engineering and commissioning efficiency, including troubleshooting escalation support and optimization of startup and field execution performanceCollaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external stakeholders, while mentoring and developing junior engineers through coaching and training initiativesQualifications Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, or related field with 10 years of experience in controls engineering within material handling, automation, or related industryMaster's degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred and may be considered in place of up to two years of experienceProfessional certifications such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or TUV Functional Safety Engineer are preferredAdvanced proficiency with Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, GuardLogix, Studio 5000) and Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, S7)Advanced knowledge of industrial networks, including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and safety networksStrong experience in control system architecture, integration, and large-scale material handling systems (sortation, conveyors, AS/RS, robotics)Strong experience with HMI/SCADA development, system visualization, and software development lifecycle (SDLC), testing, and quality assurance processesKnowledge of electrical design principles, device selection, and control panel integrationProven ability to lead technical direction and manage project scope, schedules, and budgets across multiple concurrent projects or programsStrong technical decision-making and stakeholder influence skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiencesAbility to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment and travel domestically up to 60% to support commissioning, customer meetings, and critical project phasesBenefits Flexible work environment with paid time off for parental leave and 22+ days off for personal time and holidaysMedical, dental, and vision insurance plans with FSA or HSA options, and a 401(k) plan with company match up to six percentCompany-paid benefits including vision insurance, short and long-term disability, basic life insurance, and educational and employee assistance programsWorking environment Körber is pioneering cutting-edge sorting technology and solutions for mail and parcel automation across Europe, North America, and Asia.
