Job Summary and Qualifications

Special Procedure Technicians assist physicians with evaluating patients. These technicians record patients' vital signs, medication incompatibilities and allergies. They also keep an eye on patients to alert doctors about any special needs or potential risks regarding treatment or radiation doses. Special procedures technicians can administer medication and therapies under a physician's direction. They must also label radiographs, develop film and collate X-rays. Laboratory responsibilities include participating in the hospital's quality-assurance program and identifying lab problems that could affect test results.

What you will do in this role:

  • Completes assignments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior and etiquette in all interactions with physicians, managers, coworkers, and patients.
  • Demonstrates appropriate communications skills.
  • Demonstrates competency in radiation protection to the patient and staff in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  • Identifies anatomical orientation on all required images and ensures proper identification on all images.
  • Assesses patient condition, ensures patient safety through proper use of restraints / support devices under staff guidance.
  • Demonstrates proper procedure in contrast injection.
  • Demonstrates proper procedure for PICC line insertions / removal.
  • Demonstrates competency in proper special lab technique and set up.
  • Demonstrates competency in specials operations: A) Processes B) Angiographic Protocols C) Digital Imaging D) Vascular Interventional Procedures E) Image Production F) Catheters, guide wires, needles G) Patient Education H) Informed Consent I) Patient Assessment / Monitoring J) Medications K) Sterile Technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in intracranial angiography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in extracranial angiography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in neurologic embolization.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in thrombolysis.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in angioplasty.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in stent placement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in spinal arteriography
  • Demonstrates knowledge in vertebroplasty
  • Demonstrates knowledge in thrombectomy
  • Demonstrates knowledge in pulmonary arteriograms
  • Demonstrates knowledge in pulmonary embolization
  • Demonstrates knowledge in thoracic aortography
  • Demonstrates knowledge in renal angiography
  • Demonstrates knowledge in adrenal angiography
  • Demonstrates knowledge of TIPS procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge of chemoembolization
  • Demonstrates knowledge of selective visceral angiography
  • Demonstrates knowledge of angioplasty
  • Demonstrates knowledge of biopsies, abscess drainage, and removal of foreign body.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Must have graduated from an accredited school of Radiological Technology with an Associate’s degree or equivalent.
  • BCLS required.
  • Current licensure in Texas as a Radiologic Technologist (GMRT)
  • Must be registered in the America Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with Radiology Technology (RT), or registry eligible. If registry eligible, must pass registry within one year of start date for continued employment.
  • Clinical experience is preferred.
