GREATER NEW BEDFORD REGIONAL VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

10 Month Position (185 days) Works in both academic and vocational classes.

Position Purpose:

This position supports teachers in creating a safe and engaging educational environment for students with special needs in grades 9-12 academic and vocational classes. The teaching assistant assists with daily instructional activities and performs other related duties as required.

Essential Functions:

Provides direct one-to-one and small-group instructional, behavioral, and functional support to students based on individual needs and IEP requirements.

  • Assists classroom teachers in implementing accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies outlined in students' IEPs to ensure equitable access to curriculum and learning activities.
  • Supports teachers in adapting instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and classroom activities to meet individual student needs.
  • Collaborates with teachers and guidance counselors to manage behaviors, and assist with personal care, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitors and reinforces the implementation of accommodations and modifications during instruction and assessments, communicating concerns or recommendations to the special education liaison as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in assignment and scheduling to meet the changing needs of students and the Special Services Department, including reassignment to different classrooms, programs, or student support roles as directed.
  • Provide coverage for classrooms or student support assignments when staffing needs arise, ensuring continuity of services for students.
  • Collaborates with teachers and special education staff to promote student success while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with special education regulations.
  • Maintains records regarding students' progress in academics and vocational courses.

Adheres to student IEPs in assigned classes and tracks individual student data.

  • Disseminates information that is observed to the appropriate staff members.
  • Communicates as needed with special education liaisons.
  • Participates in staff and faculty meetings.
  • Participates in the evaluation process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of the Special Services department.

Recommended Minimum Qualification

Education, Training and Experience:

High School graduate, with preferred experience working with students with disabilities
