Description

Lorenzo ISD is seeking a dedicated and student-centered educator to serve as a Special Education Teacher (PK-12). This position supports students with diverse learning needs across grade levels by providing individualized instruction, ensuring compliance with special education requirements, and collaborating with staff and families. The ideal candidate is flexible, compassionate, and committed to helping all students reach their full potential.

Primary Purpose

Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and ensure students receive appropriate services and supports across grade levels.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Strategies and Student Support

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students receiving special education services across PK-12 grade levels.
  • Develop and implement instructional programs aligned to student needs and IEP goals.
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet individual student needs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and access to grade-level content.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies, materials, and technology to support diverse learners.

IEP Development and ARD Process

  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs through the ARD Committee process.
  • Write clear, measurable goals and objectives aligned to student needs.
  • Participate in ARD/IEP meetings and collaborate with parents, staff, and service providers.
  • Maintain required documentation, including IEP progress reports, ARD paperwork, and service logs.

Progress Monitoring and Student Growth

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal methods.
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor progress toward IEP goals.
  • Adjust instruction, interventions, and supports based on student performance.
  • Provide regular progress reports to parents and stakeholders.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' developmental needs.
  • Manage student behavior and implement behavior supports aligned to IEPs.
  • Intervene in crisis situations and ensure student safety, including physical support as required.
  • Plan and oversee the work of instructional aides and volunteers.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding accommodations, modifications, and student needs.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Support implementation of inclusive practices and tiered interventions across campuses.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with all state, federal, and district special education regulations.
  • Participate in professional development and ongoing training related to special education practices.
  • Stay informed of current laws, policies, and best practices.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to work across multiple grade levels and campuses as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

One of the following is required:

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education

OR

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in another subject area with appropriate Special Education endorsement

OR

  • Currently enrolled in a state-approved educator preparation program and must provide a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) prior to hire

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of special education laws, ARD process, and IEP development
  • Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for students with special needs
  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior effectively
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience

  • Student teaching, internship, or related experience preferred
