The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction, case management, and behavioral support services to students with disabilities in grades 6-8. The teacher collaborates with general education staff, families, and support personnel to ensure students receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). This position requires expertise in behavior intervention, data-based decision making, and implementation of individualized educational programs (IEPs) designed to improve academic, social-emotional, and behavioral outcomes.
As a member of a school district team, the teacher must demonstrate flexibility, strong communication skills, and a commitment to building positive relationships with students, peers, families, and community stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Education and Licensure
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education.
- Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Special Education Teaching License.
- Appropriate Wisconsin Special Education licensure for teaching students with disabilities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required Wisconsin certifications and training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree preferred in Special Education, Educational Leadership, Behavior Analysis, or related field.
- Training or certification in behavior intervention, trauma-informed practices, restorative practices, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
- Experience supporting students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.
- Recommeded 3 - 5 years of experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Support
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Deliver specialized instruction aligned to Wisconsin Academic Standards and individual student needs.
- Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learning abilities and disabilities.
- Utilize evidence-based instructional practices to improve academic achievement.
- Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies based on data.
- Support student transitions between grade levels and educational settings.
Behavior Intervention and Support
- Demonstrate knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and functional behavior assessment (FBA) processes.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Utilize proactive, positive behavior support strategies to improve student outcomes.
- Analyze behavioral data and collaborate with teams to develop intervention plans.
- Support students with social-emotional and behavioral needs through evidence-based practices.
- Assist staff in implementing behavior support plans and classroom management strategies.
- Participate in crisis prevention, de-escalation, and student safety procedures as required.
Case Management
- Serve as case manager for assigned students.
- Facilitate IEP meetings.
- Maintain accurate special education records and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Wisconsin DPI requirements, and district procedures.
- Collaborate with related service providers regarding student needs and services.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and programming.
Collaboration
- Consistently collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, student support teams, and professional learning communities.
- Provide consultation and coaching to staff regarding accommodations, modifications, and behavioral support.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community agencies.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
- Participate in professional development related to special education, behavior intervention, and instructional best practices.
- Remain current on federal and state special education regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Director of Special Education.

- Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, PBIS, trauma-informed practices, and restorative approaches.
- Ability to conduct data analysis and use assessment information to guide instruction.

Work Environment
The position is performed in a school setting and may include classroom instruction, small-group instruction, consultation, and participation in meetings. The employee may be required to support students exhibiting behavioral, emotional, or physical challenges.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with district policies, Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness requirements, and established professional standards.
