Position Summary


The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized, evidence-based instruction to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a private school setting. This role focuses on developing academic, behavioral, communication, and social skills through structured teaching, data-driven decision-making, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.


Key Responsibilities


Instruction & Curriculum


  •  Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to each student’s needs 
  •  Deliver instruction using evidence-based practices such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), TEACCH, and other structured teaching strategies 
  •  Adapt curriculum materials to meet diverse learning styles and developmental levels 
  •  Provide direct instruction in academic, communication, social, and daily living skills 
Behavior Support


  •  Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) with fidelity 
  •  Use positive behavior supports and reinforcement strategies to reduce maladaptive behaviors 
  •  Collect and analyze behavioral data to inform instructional decisions 
Assessment & Data Collection


  •  Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress 
  •  Maintain accurate and timely data collection on academic and behavioral goals 
  •  Use data to modify teaching strategies and interventions 
Collaboration


  •  Work closely with Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists 
  •  Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress 
  •  Participate in IEP meetings, team meetings, and professional development 
Classroom Management


  •  Maintain a structured, safe, and supportive classroom environment 
  •  Supervise paraprofessionals or Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) as assigned 
  •  Ensure compliance with school policies and state/federal regulations 
Qualifications


  •  Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, Psychology, or related field.
  •  Valid state teaching certification in Special Education (preferred) 
  •  Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder 
  •  Knowledge of ABA principles and data collection methods preferred 
  •  Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills 
Preferred Skills


  •  Experience with verbal behavior programming 
  •  Familiarity with assistive communication devices (AAC) 
  •  Crisis prevention/intervention training (e.g., CPI) 
  •  Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment 
Work Environment


  •  Private school setting specializing in autism education 
  •  Small classroom sizes with high staff-to-student ratios 
  •  May involve physical activity including lifting, assisting with mobility, or managing behaviors 
Physical Requirements


  •  Ability to stand, walk, and engage actively throughout the day 
  •  Ability to lift up to 25–50 pounds as needed 
  •  Ability to respond quickly to student behaviors to ensure safety
