Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day

McFarland School District is seeking highly dynamic candidates to fill an opening for a Special Education Teacher beginning in the 2026-27 school year. We aspire to hire individuals who can help us work toward our mission of meeting the needs of every learner, every day and our vision of being an equitable and inclusive community committed to student belonging, achievement, and growth.

What Your Day Will Look Like:

A special education teacher at McFarland Primary School supports students across kindergarten through second grade and serves a wide range of disability areas. Throughout the day, they provide specially designed instruction to individual students and small groups while collaborating closely with classroom teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals. They monitor student progress, collect data, and adjust instruction to meet each student''s unique learning and behavioral needs. The role also includes developing and managing IEPs, participating in evaluation and IEP team meetings, and ensuring compliance with state and federal special education requirements. In addition, the teacher maintains ongoing communication with families and works to promote student success across academic, social-emotional, and functional skill areas.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong cross-categorical teaching experience at the elementary school level
  • Experience with creating and implementing FBAs and BIPs, including data analysis and proactive behavior management strategies
  • Knowledge of formative and summative assessment, diagnostic evaluation and interpretation, and IEP development
  • The ability to differentiate curriculum, instruction, and assessment using evidence-based instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications
  • Flexibility to work across multiple grade-levels
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and electronic)
  • Comfort with assisting students with hygiene, toileting, and health tasks
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with the continuum of inclusive practices, including co-teaching models
  • Strong collaboration skills, including partnering with families and service providers
  • The ability to provide direction, support, and management of multiple educational assistants
  • Knowledge and experience with Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Multi-Level Systems of Support (MLSS)

Why People Stay:

Through one-on-one interviews, McFarland staff say making deep connections with colleagues (including administrators) and students help them feel supported in McFarland. Staff who have worked in other districts noted that in McFarland class sizes are lower, special education caseloads are smaller, team budgets are larger, and they are glad to work in a community that supports schools, has a positive climate and a school board who respects teachers. We have a full-time librarian, social worker, school psychologist, and at least one school counselor in each building.

The District:

The McFarland School District stands out as one of the top academic districts in Dane County and Wisconsin, offering a strong educational foundation that families and educators are proud of. With an average enrollment of 2,100 to 2,400 students, McFarland is large enough to provide a comprehensive EC-12 academic and co-curricular program, yet small enough to focus on each student''s unique needs. Known statewide for its welcoming atmosphere and student-centered approach, McFarland consistently attracts top-quality staff who enhance our vibrant, thriving community.

What We Offer:

The McFarland School District is committed to supporting the well-being of its employees by offering a comprehensive benefits package. Our goal is to provide you and your family with resources that promote health, financial security, and work-life balance.
