Position Title: Special Education Supervisor

Contract: Teacher Contract

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Special Education, Assistant Director of Special Education

Basic Function: The Supervisor of Special Education supervises the special education programs within areas of responsibility in accordance with Board objectives and policies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Acts in accordance with negotiated contracts, district policy, and state and federal regulations. Promotes the programs of the South Bend Community School Corporation with staff, students, and other community members.
  • Delegates authority and responsibility where appropriate, and provides support to the employee assuming responsibility.
  • Assumes responsibility for recruiting, selection, recommending, hiring, demotion, transfer, retention, or dismissal of district employees.
  • Participates and facilitates understanding and cooperation with the administrative team.
  • Promotes positive communication with students, parents, and community members.
  • Supervises or conducts, upon request, performance improvement for all personnel for whom he/she is involved.
  • Develops and maintains a plan of professional growth which promotes both personal and organizational goals.
  • Assists in development and administers budget in area of responsibility.
  • Assists in evaluating the performance of all personnel for whom he/she is involved.
  • Directs the process of the selection and adoption of materials for use by those whom he/she supervises.
  • Assists and advises in the implementation of special education curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Provides for the professional development of staff.
  • Establishes working relationships with teaching staff, principals and support personnel.
  • Works cooperatively with community agencies.
  • Provides support for the role of special education in the total curriculum.
  • Promotes the policies, procedures, and practices of the Special Education Department.
  • Appropriately assess concerns and address them as needed.
  • Promotes the least restrictive environment for each student.
  • Monitors compliance requirements.
  • Conducts Manifestation Determination Conferences (MDC).
  • Assists schools in developing strategies to decrease suspensions/expulsions.
  • Provides district schools with staff development and training opportunities.

Principal Characteristics of Work:

  • Monitoring program needs and effectiveness.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit reports as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Required experience or training
  • Master's degree
  • Three years of successful teaching experience in the field of special education
  • Certification in at least one area of special education with thorough knowledge in the area of expertise
  • Must hold a valid and active administrator license
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a special education supervisory position.

Desired experience or training:

  • Administrative experience
  • Administrative license
  • Advanced graduate work beyond a Master's degree
  • Experience conducting Manifestation Determination Conferences (MDCs)

Physical Demands:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other technologies and office equipment, sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; kneeling; bending at the waist; lifting; pushing, pulling and carrying equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read; prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.
