Title: Supervisor Special Education

Reports to: Director of Special Education

Job Goal: To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to provide sound educational programs for students who require special education services.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):

  • Masters degree or equivalent. Full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • Three years of successful experience in special education and one year of successful experience as a supervisor and/or coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Acts as the Special Education Administrative Representative in Case Conferences.

  2. Evaluates on an ongoing basis, the Special Ed. Curriculum, procedures, and individual students' needs and achievements.

  3. Supervises and coordinates special education classroom programs.

  4. Responsible for compiling and maintaining all reports, records etc. legally required and useful.

  5. Interprets the objectives and programs of the Special Ed services to the Board, staff and the public.

  6. Implements procedures for referral evaluation, placement, assignment, and re-evaluation of students with regard to the Special Education services program.

  7. Consults with parents of students enrolled in the program.

  8. Provides programs to supplement regular classroom instruction.

  9. Arranges Special Education transportation.

  10. Team Lead for Safety and Behavior plans for students with disabilities

  11. Works with building administration to determine appropriate consequences for disciplinary infractions.

  12. Responsible for Manifestations when required

  13. Assigns Teachers of Record

  14. Manages all required paperwork for Move in Students

  15. Implements procedures for purchasing special education equipment and supplies.

  16. Maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities.

  17. Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing Special Education.

  18. Assists with the in-service and training of teachers.

  19. Assists in the adaption of school policies to include special education needs.

  20. Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and school sponsored activities.

  21. Schedules staff assignments.

  22. Supervises and coordinates home instruction for special students.

  23. Establishes and maintains standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary.

  24. Must possess written communication skills, including the ability to draft, edit, and proofread emails, as well as reading comprehension to respond to those emails.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to angry students/parents and neighborhoods considered to have high levels of violence potential.
