SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR - 12 Month (240 Day) Contract
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Educational Leadership or Administration and a Special Education Certification with a minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in Special Education (OR) Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate with Special Education Certification and a minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in Special Education preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Alabama State Department of Education regulations.
- Meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
JOB GOAL:
Provide vision, leadership, direction and coordination for Special Education services and programs. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and policies governing special education while promoting high-quality educational opportunities and positive outcomes for students with disabilities. Plans, develops and implements policies and practices to insure effective and responsive Special Education services and programs for the school system.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the development, organization and administration of the district's special education services.
- Oversees preparation of reports, requirements and mandates as required by local, state and federal agencies relating to Special Education.
- Serves as the District 504 Coordinator for students, overseeing implementation of the program and monitoring district compliance.
- Serves as the District Gifted Program Coordinator for students, overseeing implementation of the program and monitoring district compliance.
- Provides leadership and initiative necessary to organize and operate Special Education Programs.
- Coordinates state testing of Special Education students with District Test Coordinator.
- Provides expertise on staffing, curriculum, facilities, finance and legal issues for Special Education programs.
- Assists and supports the Superintendent in Special Education areas and concerns.
- Supports Professional Development programs for both Special Education and regular education staff relative to education of Special Education students.
- Provides for the professional growth of staff assigned to all areas of the Special Education Department.
- Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education and general education and shares this information with administration and staff.
- Collaborates with administration in the areas of school improvement and staff development.
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special education staff, related and support service staff.
- Monitors operation of district programs for students with disabilities to ensure operation in accordance with state adopted and approved policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ensures compliance with all federal and state special education laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Negotiates and mediates Special Education issues with parents, staff, and advocates.
- Provides leadership in developing and sharing current knowledge and innovative trends in Special Education.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with legislation and best practice.
- Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
- Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Salary Range: According to Cherokee County Schools Salary Schedule. Actual salary will be determined by degree and verified experience.
