POSITION TITLE: Special Education Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Special Services

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Special Services

JOB GOAL:

To assist administrative supervisor in all aspects of special education

administration as well as improvement of services for special education students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise and evaluate staff at the Special Services Department including,

but not limited to:

Special Services Center Consultants

Special Education Teachers

OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs

School Psychometrists/School Psychologists/LPCs

Secretaries

Others as assigned

  1. Coordinate the Classroom Assistants (CA IIs) in the district.
  • Provide support to administrators and special education teachers in posting, interviewing, training, and if necessary, terminating CA IIs in all special education programs in the district.
  • Develop Guidelines for school personnel regarding need for CA
  • Prepare a proposal to the Director of Special Services regarding the need for new CA II positions.
  • Provide training to CAs in all programs.
  • Research ideas for training topics.
  • Provide Director of Special Services with a copy of the hand-outs, sign-in sheets, and agenda of trainings to the CAs.
  • Coordinate the transfer, retention, training, and needs assessment of CA II's.
  • Consistently communicate training opportunities and requirements to CA's.
  1. Provide support to administrators and special education teachers on a regular basis.
  • Provide a monthly schedule to the Director of Special Services regarding specific ideas for planned site visits involving observations, training, consulting, etc.
  • Coordinate, plan, develop, and implement professional development for special services teachers and staff, including smart starts, beginning of the year, district PD days, and ongoing training needs.
  • Maintain record of training provided to all staff (sign-in sheet, agenda, and hand-outs).
  • Oversee CPI Implementation and Training Districtwide.
  • Attend IEP meetings of students in all programs as requested by site teams.
  • Serve as administrator for Sooner Start meetings.
  • Support Residential and Partial Hospitalization Facilities located within EPS boundaries on IEP implementation.
  • Work with IAES on IEP implementation.
  • Collaborate with district mental health providers, MTSS facilitators, and district-level staff on supporting students on IEPs.
  • Work with District Safety Committee.
  1. Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development. Keep current with literature, new research findings, and improved techniques/methodologies; and for attending professional meetings.

  2. Assist the Director of Special Services in fully implementing IDEA/504 educational programming. Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education.

  3. Assist the Director of Special Services in reviewing program projections and staffing needs. Recruit, retain, and support special education teachers and staff

  4. Assist the Director of Special Services in child count and data reporting, as determined by the state and federal government.

  5. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Length of Contract: Two hundred forty (240) contract days.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Executive Director of Special Services in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policies and state law.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Is responsible for the supervision of certified staff and support staff, and its designated function within the District. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education Requirements:

Master's degree in special education or related field. Five years experience in special education or related field. Minimum 3 years of experience in an administrative role.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid Standard Oklahoma Teacher Certificate. Valid Oklahoma principal certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to plan budgets and use the mathematical skills required to do so. Maintain accurate records and support documentation for projects under the supervision of the position.

REASONABLE ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to use computer and computer related programs and other technologies needed to perform essential job functions. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory. Ability to establish and maintain effective working

relationships with staff and school personnel. Ability to organize and chair or facilitate committees and meetings. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all

district requirements and Board of Education policies.
