Description: Performs a variety of responsible and specialized tasks in the physical care and classroom instruction of students with disabilities; and assists students with disabilities in meeting the physical requirements of attending school.

APPLICATION FILING PERIOD: The application filing period will remain open until a sufficient number of qualified applications are received. Recruitment may close at any time.

CURRENT VACANCIES: Various opportunities exist for permanent and on-call or long-term substitute assignments. The eligibility list will be used to fill both types of positions based on the immediate and future needs of the District. All positions are part-time, 9.25 months per year, 6 hours per day. Permanent positions are Monday through Friday and include full benefits for the employee only. Both permanent and substitute assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta, or Montrose).

SALARY: Positions in this classification start at the fourth step of the salary range at $20.52 per hour. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the fourth step. Permanent employees may earn higher rates upon successful completion of the probationary period (130 days of paid service) and may receive merit increases each year up to the maximum amount.

  • Assists students upon arrival and departure at school and throughout the school day by repositioning in wheelchairs or other necessary appliances.
  • Assists students with washing, feeding, toileting, and other personal care needs.
  • Performs specialized physical health care services such as, suctioning, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, oxygen administration and care of related equipment, and administers medication as directed.
  • Provides basic emergency care as needed, including cardio pulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts until medical assistance arrives.
  • Changes sheets and linens and prepares cots and beds for rest periods.
  • Completes written accident or incident reports as needed.
  • Communicates students needs to the teacher.
  • Cleans and maintains activity rooms, equipment, and utensils.
  • Supervises students in physical and instructional activities providing assistance as directed by a teacher.
  • Observes and reports on students progress.
  • Performs a variety of office clerical tasks such as typing and preparing dittos and stencils.
  • Assists in administering, scoring, and maintaining records or tests.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of: Personal needs and behavioral characteristics of students with disabilities. Special education materials, practices, concepts, and techniques. Record keeping principles and procedures. Classroom procedures and rules of conduct. Basic emergency, first aid, and health care techniques. Clerical practices and procedures.
  • Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Assist students with disabilities with personal care needs and activities. Assist in physical transfer of students with disabilities (approximately 50 - 75 pounds). Observe, evaluate, and report on students progress. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Compile and maintain records and files; operate a variety of office machines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • License or Certificate: Incumbents must obtain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate within the designated probationary period for this classification.

DESIABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of experience working with handicapped individuals.
  • Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

SALARY: Listed salary amounts indicate the fourth and last steps of the range for the position. Hiring for this position is on an as-needed basis and could occur at any time during a school year. EXAMINATION PROCESS: A review of the applicants experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.

ELIGIBILITY LIST: Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.

CLASSIFICATION: When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.

FINGERPRINT REQUIREMENT: California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.

CERTIFICATE OF TUBERCULOSIS EXAMINATION: New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.

ACCOMMODATION: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination and laboratory tests, which include a urinalysis. The urinalysis includes a drug screening. These tests must be given by a District-approved physician.

MANDATORY CHILD ABUSE REPORTING TRAINING (AB1432): As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reported Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.
