Job Description
Under general supervision, a Collection Driver III operates solid waste vehicles and equipment to perform waste collection, disposal, and recycling pickup, mainly on residential routes. This position may also operate other specialized equipment and assist with disposal and recycling diversion tasks.
Ideal candidates will be highly motivated and eager to apply their skills safely and efficiently while providing excellent customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Drives and operates automated side-load trucks on a route to collect solid waste and/or recycling.
- Drives between collection points and landfill/recycling center.
- Assembles, delivers, and repairs carts and dumpsters.
- Drives and operates a pickup-based hook lift truck; drops off containers, picks up full containers, and transports them to the landfill.
- Prepares trucks for adverse weather conditions (e.g., installs chains on tires).
- Inspects and reviews the condition of the truck and equipment, including checking fluid levels, brakes, and lights.
- Washes, cleans, and performs maintenance (refuel, grease, change tires, drain air tanks). Reports any issues.
- Operates a variety of vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the collection and disposal of solid waste, including trucks, hand tools, and power tools.
- Observes safety precautions while operating small and large vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains simple records and logs and completes reports as necessary.
- Answers general and basic customer questions about routes in a professional and courteous manner; escalates as necessary to ensure questions are answered accurately.
- Assists with litter collection at the landfill.
- Assists with the packaging and/or processing of recycling/diversion materials.
Qualifications and Requirements
A combination of the following experience and training would be qualifying:
- Possession of a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B minimum is highly preferred, but at a minimum, the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months.
- The City will provide training to obtain the CDL.
- Some experience in heavy truck operation.
Special Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 75 pounds.
- Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining workspace, mechanical hazards, dust, and other allergens.
- Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
