General Statement of Duties

This position is a Soil and Water Conservation professional who is responsible for the development, application and maintenance of soil and water conservation practices within the Forsyth County district area. This individual works as a team member with another Conservationist. This employee provides technical assistance to individuals, units of government, land owners in urban conservation areas and provides assistance with soil and water conservation practices on farms. The work involves considerable public contact in collaborating with landowners and local farmers. The work will be performed under the general direction of the NC Cooperative Extension Director and is evaluated by the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the conservation program.
Distinguishing Features

This position includes office and outside work with some flexibility of hours. Position will perform intermediate skilled technical work including consulting, evaluating, surveying, designing and contracting for clientele regarding a wide variety of soil and water conservation practices. Conservation planning includes knowledge of natural resources, agriculture, soil science, and engineering. The position manages the Community Conservation Assistance Program (CCAP), which includes providing technical assistance as well as managing disbursement of cost-share funds for urban conservation practices. The position serves as a liaison with and provides support to the Forsyth Soil and Water Conservation District Board, which oversees Soil and Water Conservation programs for the county.

The ideal candidate has:
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations on soil and water conservation activities.
  • Knowledge of survey and farm equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with landowners concerning conservation practices and governing regulations.
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee the implementation of conservation projects.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player depending upon work activities.
  • Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical information and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to attain certification by the state to sign conservation projects.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs occasionally or sit most of the time.
Minimum Education and Experience

- Graduation from college with a four-year degree in agriculture or a related field. Prefer one or more years of relevant experience. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. A four-year degree outside of the relevant academic field plus additional years of relevant experience may also be considered.

- Valid NC driver's license required.
- Functional knowledge of Spanish preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers the Cost Share programs available through the NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation.
  • Provides technical assistance to agricultural landowners to resolve water quality problems and determine eligibility for state funding for financial resources.
  • Oversees the Farmland Preservation Program by evaluating annual compliance verification of program participants, answering inquiries pertaining to program restrictions.
  • Provides support for the Agricultural Advisory Board, which oversees the Voluntary Agricultural District program.
  • Informs District of activities essential to the District:
    1. Technical assistance
    2. Administrative duties (records and reports)
    3. Conducting on-site investigations and measurements
    4. Collecting physical data on properties visited
    5. Implement and develop conservation practices and alternatives
  • Provides education for adults and youth about conservation practices and the importance of natural resources.
