Job Description

Job Title: Software Architect III Location: Cincinnati, OH (Onsite) Pay: $65-$74 Length: 9 months

General Function The Principal Solution Architect is a senior technical leader who operates with a high degree of independence and minimal oversight. This role is recognized as a subject matter expert and provides strategic and technical leadership in the evaluation, design, and implementation of complex technology solutions aligned with business objectives.

The incumbent partners closely with business stakeholders, product teams, and engineering squads to advance technology strategies, often serving as the application owner for third-party and internally developed solutions supporting specific business domains. Responsibilities include vendor engagement, roadmap alignment, architectural design, and ensuring continuity, scalability, and effectiveness of solutions.

The role requires flexibility to support highly complex initiatives, contribute to enterprise architecture direction, and provide guidance to less experienced engineers. When aligned with agile teams, the Principal Solution Architect collaborates with Product Owners to ensure well-defined user stories and effective technical execution.

All employees are expected to actively manage risk by adhering to policies and procedures, escalating concerns appropriately, and operating within established risk tolerances while delivering positive outcomes for customers and colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define and contribute to the long-term technical vision for one or more products or domains, and lead execution toward that vision.
  • Design end-to-end technology solutions that align with business requirements, performance expectations, scalability needs, and security standards.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, product owners, and delivery teams to incorporate software changes and ensure effective implementation.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with software vendors, including roadmap alignment and evaluation of upcoming enhancements.
  • Assess and recommend continued use, modernization, or decommissioning of internal and third-party solutions.
  • Implement and maintain new features and capabilities while continuously improving solution quality and reliability.
  • Promote and apply industry and organizational best practices, contributing to communities of practice and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Drive operational excellence through automation and the development of maintainable, testable, and supportable solutions.
  • Monitor emerging technologies and trends relevant to assigned domains and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Provide operational support and troubleshooting for supported platforms and services.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Identify opportunities for reuse and cross-team collaboration to enhance enterprise capabilities.
  • Act as a trusted advisor and recognized authority for specific technologies or architectural domains.

Supervisory Responsibilities None.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant technology discipline or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering or IT experience relevant to solution architecture.
  • Experience with both commercial off-the-shelf and internally developed applications.
  • Strong understanding of reactive architectures and microservice-oriented design.
  • Knowledge of decentralized and asynchronous data flows, modern data warehousing practices, and data security principles.
  • Experience with containerized applications in hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and support complex technical solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience working in highly collaborative, cross-functional environments.
  • Deep understanding of IT security best practices.
  • Experience analyzing legacy systems, documenting current-state architectures, and designing modernized solutions.
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical leadership to engineering teams.

Technical Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience with Java 17 or higher.
  • 3-5 years of experience with Spring 6.x and Spring Boot 3.x.
  • 3-5 years of experience developing RESTful APIs and backend-for-frontend services.
  • 1-3 years of experience with microservice-based backend architectures.
  • 1-2 years of experience working within Agile/Scrum teams.
  • 1-3 years of experience with Test-Driven Development using JUnit.
  • Experience with Git-based version control and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub, Jenkins, artifact repositories).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in financial services or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with core transactional platforms such as account processing, payments, or billing systems.
