A Tennessee public school high school softball coach is primarily responsible for leading all aspects of a school's softball program while ensuring strict compliance with Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) regulations and school district policies. 

 

Core Duties & Responsibilities
  • Athletic Development: Plan and conduct effective practices focused on softball fundamentals, game strategies, and player conditioning.
  • Student-Athlete Supervision: Supervise players during practices, home games, away games, and team travel.
  • TSSAA & Policy Compliance: Ensure all student-athletes meet TSSAA eligibility requirements and adhere to state rules and regional regulations.
  • Character and Mentorship: Promote good sportsmanship, discipline, academic performance, and personal responsibility both on and off the field.
  • Program Operations: Manage the team budget, coordinate field scheduling, arrange team transportation, and handle uniform and equipment inventories.
  • Safety & Maintenance: Conduct daily safety inspections of practice fields, coordinate with the school athletic trainer on injury prevention, and handle reporting.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain transparent, positive relationships with parents, administration, media, and community stakeholders. 

 

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
 
According to TSSAA Bylaws, coaches in Tennessee public schools must be registered annually and generally fall into specific categories determining their employment paths: 
 
  • Faculty Pathway: Possess a Bachelor's degree and a valid Tennessee Teaching License. Candidates typically hold a full-time teaching position within the district alongside the coaching supplement.
  • Non-Faculty / Classified Pathway: School districts may hire non-faculty coaches or classified employees who do not hold a teaching license, provided they pass background checks and receive approval from the school principal and local board of education.
  • Sport Expertise: Proven experience playing or coaching softball, with a deep understanding of standard high school game regulations.
  • Certifications: Active certifications in CPR, First Aid, and standard concussion protocols as mandated by state athletic guidelines.

 

Employment Terms
  • Type: Seasonal contract or a supplemental stipend attached to a full-time educator salary.
  • Schedule: Afternoon practices, evening games, and weekend tournament travel during the spring season, alongside occasional off-season conditioning sessions.
