About the Opportunity

The School Special Education Social Worker supports students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs by providing direct services, conducting special education evaluations, collaborating with families and school teams, and connecting students with community resources. This position also provides individual and small-group services in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) while supporting general education intervention efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist students and families in accessing appropriate school and community-based services.
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling focused on social-emotional development, behavior management, conflict resolution, goal setting, and other identified student needs.
  • Conduct social work evaluations for special education eligibility and prepare required evaluation reports.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and provide case management support as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success.
  • Assist with crisis prevention, intervention, and post-crisis support.
  • Serve on Student Support Teams, Child Study Teams, and other multidisciplinary teams.
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and collaborate in the development and implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIPs/BIPs).
  • Provide consultation and coaching to teachers and staff regarding effective behavioral and social-emotional supports.
  • Coordinate with community agencies and outside providers to ensure continuity of services.
  • Promote regular student attendance and support families in addressing barriers to school success.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA, IDEA, MARSE, and other applicable regulations.
  • Other duties as needed.

About You

  • Valid Michigan Professional School Social Worker Certificate (PSWC) issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Experience providing school-based social work services, including counseling, crisis intervention, behavioral interventions, consultation, and family engagement.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
  • Knowledge of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), IDEA, special education evaluation procedures, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, families, community agencies, and school personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, and organizational communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential student records in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and applicable state and federal laws.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, solve practical problems, and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to successfully pass all required federal and state criminal background checks (FBI/BCI).
  • Previous experience in a public or charter school setting.
  • Experience conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and developing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Experience collaborating with outside mental health agencies and community organizations.
