Investigations Case Worker (CANS/Safety Worker) – Jefferson County, AL | VieMed Healthcare Staffing

Location: Jefferson County
Pay Rate: $32.25/hour
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 8-Hour Shifts | In-Person

VieMed Healthcare Staffing is urgently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Investigations Case Worker (CANS/Safety Worker) to support child welfare operations in Jefferson County. This critical role focuses on conducting and completing child abuse/neglect investigations, responding to prevention cases, and ensuring timely safety decisions that protect vulnerable children and families.

Position Summary
As an Investigations Case Worker, you will serve as a frontline safety professional responsible for responding to assigned reports involving documented allegations of abuse, neglect, dependency, or safety concerns. You will gather facts, assess immediate risk, complete required investigative actions, and make recommendations regarding child safety and case disposition.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Responding quickly to assigned prevention and investigation cases involving child safety concerns

  • Conducting child abuse and neglect investigations in accordance with agency policy and mandated timelines

  • Completing CANS/Safety assessments, home visits, interviews, collateral contacts, and evidence gathering

  • Interviewing children, caregivers, family members, schools, medical providers, and community supports

  • Assessing immediate danger threats and implementing safety plans when warranted

  • Determining findings and documenting investigative outcomes thoroughly and objectively

  • Preparing affidavits, court reports, testimony summaries, and professional recommendations

  • Managing a high-volume caseload while maintaining strict deadlines

  • Collaborating with law enforcement, courts, schools, hospitals, and multidisciplinary partners

  • Maintaining professionalism in difficult, high-stress, and emotionally sensitive situations

  • Traveling throughout assigned coverage areas as needed
What You’ll Bring Education (Required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or related field from an accredited institution
Preferred Experience

  • Prior child welfare investigations, CPS, APS, family services, juvenile justice, or crisis response experience

  • Experience conducting field interviews, home visits, and safety/risk assessments

  • Knowledge of abuse/neglect indicators, trauma-informed practice, and family systems
Skills & Competencies

  • High sense of urgency and ability to respond quickly to critical cases

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Excellent written documentation skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to prioritize multiple active investigations simultaneously

  • Sound judgment and decision-making under pressure

  • Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation abilities

  • Professional communication with families, courts, and stakeholders

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

  • Emotional resilience and professionalism in challenging environments
Additional Requirements

  • Completion of Alabama Department of Human Resources orientation/training as required

  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current vehicle insurance

  • Ability to travel throughout assigned counties/service areas

  • Candidates previously employed by AL DHR must meet any required separation guidelines

  • Must report directly to county management staff and follow county assignment expectations
Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Pay: $32.25/hour

  • On-Call Pay: $2.00/hour

  • Call-Back Rate: $32.35/hour

  • Mileage reimbursement for approved business travel
