Job Description:

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a part-time, temporary Social Media Content Creator & Assistant. It is anticipated that this position will end in December 2026. The Social Media Content Creator & Assistant works directly with the Social Media Specialist to bring the Virginia Western story to life. This role is responsible for the end-to-end production of digital content that documents and promotes the campus experience. This role focuses on capturing high-quality multimedia assets, executing short-form video strategies, and managing day-to-day community engagement to strengthen the College's brand presence across social platforms. By maintaining high standards for accessibility and brand voice, the position ensures that Virginia Western's digital communication remains inclusive, timely, and aligned with institutional goals. The role requires a balance of creative storytelling, technical editing skills, and administrative reliability to support the College's broader recruitment and retention efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education, training and/or experience in social media, communications, marketing or related field.
  • Experience developing engaging and persuasive marketing and/or social media content.
  • Experience collaborating with others to create and execute content.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel, as well as CapCut and Canva.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft professional, relatable, and persuasive content tailored to diverse stakeholders and audience segments.
  • Knowledge of current social media platforms-specifically Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn-including their unique algorithms, emerging trends, and audience demographics.
  • Proficiency in mobile and desktop multimedia tools (e.g., CapCut, Canva, Adobe Premiere) and a strong understanding of lighting, framing, and audio quality for mobile-first production.
  • Adherence to digital accessibility standards, including ADA and WCAG compliance for alt-text, closed captioning, and visual contrast.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with a proven ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet strict deadlines with high accuracy and minimal supervision.
  • Proactive interpersonal skills to build relationships with campus partners and the confidence to approach students, faculty, and staff spontaneously for content capture.
  • Skill in community management and reputation monitoring, including the ability to moderate comments with tact, manage difficult interactions, and maintain a consistent brand voice.
  • Competence in using content management systems (WordPress) and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to analyze digital metrics to evaluate content effectiveness and identify organic, on-campus storytelling opportunities that align with the College's strategic goals.
  • A collaborative and detail-oriented approach to ensure all content is accurate, on-brand, and of the highest quality.
  • A proactive mindset toward problem-solving, with the ability to suggest improvements and drive projects forward in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Considerations:

  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with various stakeholders, including traditional and adult learners, internal team members, internal College partners, and external community partners, to collaborate on content development and execution preferred.
  • Experience in digital reputation management or basic public relations, including responding to negative feedback or sensitive community issues preferred.
  • Proficiency in a project management system, such as Trello, is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.
