Position Summary
----------------
The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary healthcare to patients and families, focusing on health maintenance, disease prevention, patient education, and counseling. Works according to Maine State Rules and Regulations following established Policies and Procedures as required and within established scope of practice. Must be a friendly, energetic, and team-oriented person looking for a long-term commitment. Proficient use of an EMR system, excellent communications skills, and pediatric experience are a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities

The following are the key duties and responsibilities of the Nurse Practitioner:
- Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
- Performs physical exams on all age-appropriate patients.
- Obtains and documents patients medical history.
- Identifies health risk factors.
- Assesses, diagnoses, and treats acute illnesses.
- Assesses, diagnoses, and treats chronic illnesses.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, procedures, i.e., laboratory work, x-rays, EKG.
- Prescribes medications and non-pharmacological therapies based on the patients diagnoses, health history, and age.
- Applies standardized care guidelines in clinical practice.
- Provides patient and/or family with health education and counseling and referrals to appropriate healthcare professionals and community resources.
- Assesses and documents patient and/or family psychosocial issues.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health team to plan optimal care for the patient.
- Works with the patient and family to formulate a patient treatment and education plan.
- Provides follow-up care, determines effectiveness of the treatment plan, reassesses, and changes the plan as needed.
- Documentation meets all standards and policies.
- Functions as a patient and family advocate.
- Consults with physicians and/or other health care providers when appropriate.
- Coordinates patient care and makes referrals as indicated.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
- Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Stays current with medical advancements, new technology, new drugs through continuing education classes, society meetings, professional journals, etc.
- Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Attends required departmental, organizational, and medical staff committee meetings as appropriate.
- Assists with development and implementation of specific policies and procedures.

- Follows policies and procedures related to medico-legal matters, including confidentiality, amendments of medical records, patient rights, medical records as legal evidence, and informed consent.
- Copies records according to policy, assuring the appropriateness of the individual requesting information from the record prior to copying, faxing, or phoning any portion of the record.

- Attends mandatory in-services on fire safety, electrical safety, infection control, and body mechanics.
- Successfully completes competency-based training in each area.
- Follows all employee health procedures, incident reporting, and infection control requirements at all times, as appropriate to the position.
- Maintains a safe work environment and performs duties of the position in a manner consistent with ensuring the safety of self and others.
- Identifies safety needs in areas outside own work environment, recommending corrective action as appropriate.
- Expense Control:
- Performs job duties in a manner that maximizes expense control.
- Uses supplies, equipment, and utilities in an expeditious manner.
- Consistently recommends methods to control costs while maintaining a high degree of customer service.
- Performs job tasks efficiently and effectively resulting in no unplanned overtime.
- Regulatory Requirements:
- Current Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse License in the State of Maine.
- Masters Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
- National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or certification eligible.
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
- Current ACLS Certification preferred.
- Current PALS Certification preferred if caring for Pediatric patients.
- Current DEA with no restriction.
- Strong computer skills, including EMR/EHR.
- Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
