Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled 5-Axis CNC Operator / Setup Technician with aerospace machining experience to operate, set up, and maintain high-performance machining equipment. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Makino 5-axis machining centers and CNClathes with live tooling, be capable of complex part setups, and ensure tight-tolerance, high-quality production. This role blends precision operation with setup expertise, requiring mechanical aptitude, problem-solving, and a strong team-oriented mindset.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate 5-axis CNC machines, primarily Makino machining centers, and CNC lathes with live tooling for mill-turn operations
- Read and interpret aerospace blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T to plan setups and operations
- Install fixtures, tools, and work holding, adjusting offsets and tooling for each setup
- Run complex aerospace components to strict tolerances and specifications
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring instruments
- Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues, including tool wear, part fit, and machine performance
- Support prove-outs of new programs in collaboration with CNC programmers and engineers
- Maintain accurate setup documentation, tooling lists, and inspection records
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with 5S and aerospace standards
- Follow all safety, quality, and regulatory procedures specific to aerospace manufacturing
- Mentor less-experienced operators and share best practices in setups and operation
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 3+ years of CNC machining experience, including 5-axis operation and setup
- Experience with CNC lathes with live tooling (mill-turn)
- Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials
- Ability to read and interpret aerospace blueprints and GD&T
- Experience holding tight tolerances in precision environments
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and basic inspection procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace manufacturing
- Hands-on experience with Makino 5-axis machining centers
- Familiarity with multi-axis machining and complex part setups
- Experience supporting program prove-outs and process improvements
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing or 5S principles
- Basic understanding of G-code and program structure
