A day in this role
You start on the floor—reviewing overnight incidents, walking production lines, and checking the status of corrective actions. You collaborate with supervisors to conduct area assessments, launch root-cause investigations when needed, and set measurable goals to reduce injuries and illnesses. By mid-morning you’re updating Environmental and Safety Management systems aligned with ISO 14001/ISO 18001, preparing performance reports for top management, and coordinating with state, local, and federal regulators (and our insurance partners) to keep the site fully compliant with OSHA and EPA requirements. In the afternoon, you refine the HSE budget—covering waste removal, PPE, consulting/testing, and safety recognition—then lead training that boosts awareness and reinforces behavior-based safety. When operational issues arise, you provide urgent response, drive team-based problem solving, and implement process changes that reduce environmental waste streams. You close the day reviewing workers’ compensation claims and planning the next site audit to identify improvements.
What you’ll do
- Build, implement, and sustain safety and environmental programs, policies, and procedures that meet or exceed OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Lead injury/illness reduction initiatives through area assessments, incident investigations, and clear KPIs.
- Apply knowledge of industrial processes, mechanics, chemistry, psychology, and safety standards to correct unsafe conditions and advance loss-control programs; track progress with meaningful metrics.
- Own the Environmental and Safety Management systems to ISO 14001/ISO 18001, report performance to leadership, and recommend improvements.
- Serve as the interface with regulatory agencies, corporate stakeholders, and insurance representatives to ensure compliance.
- Manage all OSHA and environmental reporting and recordkeeping requirements.
- Create and manage HSE budgets.
- Lead investigations into environmental or safety non-compliance and root-cause incidents; provide rapid operational support.
- Champion team-based problem solving across the plant.
- Conduct site audits to evaluate compliance and pinpoint opportunities to improve.
- Implement environmental solutions; drive process changes that reduce waste streams.
- Administer workers’ compensation claims.
- Design and deliver HSE training and awareness programs.
- Perform additional tasks and special projects as assigned.
