Our client is seeking an experienced Shop Manager to oversee all maintenance operations within a heavy-duty fleet repair facility. This individual will be responsible for driving shop performance, maximizing equipment uptime, ensuring safe and efficient maintenance practices, and leading a team of technicians and support staff. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with proven leadership abilities to improve productivity, control costs, and maintain high standards of quality, safety, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily operations of the maintenance shop, ensuring scheduled preventive maintenance and unscheduled repairs are completed efficiently.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels and effectively allocate resources to support operational demands.
  • Supervise technicians and shop personnel while providing coaching, performance feedback, training, and professional development.
  • Oversee employee scheduling, attendance, productivity, payroll, and performance management.
  • Provide technical guidance on complex diesel diagnostics, repairs, and root cause analysis to support efficient troubleshooting and long-term equipment reliability.
  • Manage warranty repair processes, documentation, and parts retention in accordance with company policies.
  • Partner with parts and inventory personnel to ensure timely procurement of materials while maintaining accurate inventory levels and controlling costs.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of heavy-duty truck maintenance, diagnostics, repair procedures, and preventative maintenance strategies.
  • Ensure fleet equipment is maintained in a clean, professional, and company-approved condition, including branding and cosmetic appearance.
  • Utilize maintenance management systems and other company software to manage work orders, reporting, inventory, and operational performance.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and shop audits to ensure compliance with company policies, DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Promote a safe, organized, and efficient work environment by maintaining shop cleanliness, organization, and overall facility appearance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve shop processes, technician efficiency, equipment reliability, and overall operational performance.


Requirements

  • Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and employee management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, prioritize work, and make sound operational decisions.
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel engine diagnostics, repair procedures, and fleet maintenance operations.
  • Experience implementing process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills, including experience with maintenance management or other Windows-based business systems.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and maintaining a positive, team-oriented culture.
  • Ability to foster collaboration and accountability while meeting operational objectives and customer expectations.

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of leadership or management experience within a fleet maintenance, heavy equipment, or commercial vehicle repair environment.
  • Previous experience as a Master Diesel Technician, Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic, or Steel Fabricator is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading maintenance teams in a fast-paced, production-driven operation.
