Position Summary

The Shipping Manager is responsible for leading all shipping, receiving, warehouse, and transportation operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective distribution of products. This role provides strategic leadership for departmental personnel, oversees carrier relationships, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and ensures customer requirements are met through effective planning and execution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead all shipping, receiving, warehouse, and distribution operations for one or multiple facilities.
  • Manage and develop supervisors and shipping personnel by providing coaching, performance management, training, and succession planning.
  • Develop staffing plans, labor utilization strategies, and scheduling to support production and customer demand.
  • Oversee daily shipping schedules to ensure on-time delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Direct receiving operations, ensuring accurate receipts, inventory transactions, and timely material flow.
  • Establish and maintain KPIs related to shipping performance, freight costs, inventory accuracy, productivity, and customer service.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets while identifying opportunities to reduce operating expenses.
  • Analyze freight spend and negotiate transportation rates and contracts in partnership with corporate logistics and approved carriers.
  • Identify and implement freight savings initiatives, including shipment consolidation, routing optimization, and transportation efficiencies.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, OSHA requirements, company safety standards, and shipping documentation requirements.
  • Lead warehouse optimization initiatives to maximize storage capacity, inventory accuracy, and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with Production, Planning, Customer Service, Purchasing, and Operations to prioritize shipments and resolve logistics challenges.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other operational excellence methodologies.
  • Monitor shipping accuracy, inventory transactions, order fulfillment, and department productivity through data analysis and reporting.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for shipping and warehouse operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality standards and internal controls.
  • Investigate customer shipping issues and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Evaluate departmental equipment needs and oversee maintenance of forklifts, trailers, dock equipment, and warehouse assets.
  • Lead annual physical inventory activities and support cycle count accuracy.
  • Prepare reports and present operational metrics and improvement initiatives to senior leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least five years of relevant logistics and manufacturing experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the day-to-day workflow of production staff.
  • Follows timekeeping requirements for production staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Manages disciplinary action process of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient with SAP or an equivalent ERP system
  • Working knowledge of Maxload, UPS Worldship, and Grainger’s Transplace
  • Knowledge and experience with ICC and DOT regulations, NMFC Classification, LTL tariffs and discounts

 

Travel Requirements: Less than 10% and as needed.

Physical Requirements:  Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing and walking on the manufacturing floor.

Work Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to manufacturing equipment and machinery, forklifts, and pallets. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme hot and cold weather conditions. Personal protective equipment is required in all areas of the production plant.
