Join StarTran as a Bus Service Worker and play a vital role in keeping our fleet safe, clean, and ready to roll!

From fueling and cleaning buses to performing light mechanical work and tackling minor building repairs-you'll be a key player behind the scenes of a smooth transit operation.

This is semi-skilled work of a mechanical nature at the sub apprentice mechanic level. This position regularly lifts 50 pounds.

What You'll Do

Fleet Care & Servicing

  • Drive buses to the service lane
  • Check fluids, fuel up, and add oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze
  • Wash the outside, spot clean the inside, dust the seats and dash, and keep things looking sharp
  • Change farebox vaults

Tire Work & Light Maintenance

  • Change, repair, and check tires
  • Assist mechanics with light repairs and help start buses in the early a.m.
  • Replace lights, lenses, and flashers
  • Operate tools like battery boosters, winches, snow blades, and more

Keep It Running

  • Do weekly inspections underneath the chassis
  • Drain air tanks and adjust brakes
  • Make road calls to bring buses back to the garage safely

Building & Grounds Upkeep

  • Clean shelters, remove snow, and fix benches
  • Handle light building repairs (lights, plumbing, doors, windows)
  • Keep facilities clean and cared for
  • This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to mandatory drug testing policies as a condition of employment.

Hours: Full Time; 8-hour shift, 5:00 am - 10:00 pm. Shift to be determined by bid. Sundays off

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Six months of experience in the servicing of diesel and automotive equipment

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid drivers license
  • Possession of valid Nebraska commercial drivers license is required, or ability to obtain CDL within 60 days of employment.

If upon retest the results are found to be negative, the City/County will reimburse the costs involved with the retest. (If the second test is found to be positive, the applicant will not be hired, and the cost of the retest will not be reimbursed.) Current employees transferring, promoting or demoting into a position requiring drug testing who test positive have the right to have their sample retested (by a DHHS certified laboratory, the original laboratory will follow approved transfer procedures) at their expense, if requested in writing to the City/County Human Resources Director within 72 hours of the final result provided by the MRO.
