Description

Join the CBJ Fleet Maintenance team, where youll maintain government vehicles supporting essential services.

This position welcomes both entry/ trainee level candidates and experienced Mechanics of light-duty vehicles to heavy equipment. Candidates with minimal to no experience may qualify for an on-the-job training program while those with more experience may qualify for higher placement. Supervisors/leads will define work assignments, monitor progress, and provide feedback, with tasks becoming more advanced over time. As part of our team, youll maintain, repair, and diagnose a diverse range of equipment and play a crucial role in maintaining the safety of CBJ's fleet equipment. CBJ Fleet Maintenance staff work together as a high-functioning team with the shared vision of providing reliable service to CBJ departments' fleet including but not limited to Engineering & Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Docks & Harbors, Finance, Human Resources & Risk Management, and Community Development.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position typically works Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., with a half-hour lunch. Additionally, this position may be required to work overtime, including weekends and holidays. The position also requires recalls for emergencies and weather events.

The shop is located at 7100 Glacier Hwy, Juneau, AK 99801.

Typical Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Service Tech I/II:

This entry/trainee-level position is ideal for those without a valid Alaska Commercial Drivers License, offering hands-on experience in maintenance mechanic activities under close supervision. Youll assist in the repair, maintenance, and modification of heavy equipment, including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and crane hoisting systems, while also performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks like cleaning, inspecting, and routine maintenance of Public Works equipment. Responsibilities include operating and transporting equipment, performing minor repairs, ensuring shop safety, and assisting with preventative maintenance. As you gain experience and obtain necessary certifications, youll take on more complex assignments with greater independence, with the potential for promotion upon meeting the required qualifications and demonstrating proficiency.

Mechanic I/II:

This journey-level mechanic position involves independently performing routine and complex maintenance and repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as construction equipment, under general supervision. Key responsibilities include inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems; rebuilding and replacing components; performing light body work, welding, and fabrication; and operating various shop equipment. The role also includes maintaining detailed records, performing preventative maintenance, using diagnostic tools, conducting road tests, and ensuring safety compliance. Additionally, the mechanic may outfit new vehicles with necessary equipment, troubleshoot and repair generators, and must stay updated on industry innovations. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Fleet Service Technician I - Range 10 - $22.74 - $23.56 (DOQ)

Licensure:

A valid drivers license at time of appointment and for continued employment and have held a drivers license for at least one year.

Requires a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes within six (6) of appointment and for continued employment.

Other:

Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment

Fleet Service Technician II - Range 11 - $24.27 - $25.90 (DOQ)

Licensure:

Requires a valid Class "A" Alaska Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes, manual transmissions and with a Tanker (N) endorsement at time of appointment and for continued employment.

Other:

Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment

Desired: Experience as an automotive serviceman, mechanic or operator desired but not required.

For Fleet Service Technician I & II:

Continued employment and advancement opportunities

Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program, meeting or exceeding performance standards, and maintaining all applicable licenses, endorsements and certifications required by the minimum qualifications.

Fleet Mechanic I - Range 14 $29.51 - $31.56 (DOQ)

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in automotive/mechanical maintenance.

Substitution:

Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on basis of 125 clock hours of instruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twelve months.

Licensure:

A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes, manual transmissions and with Tanker (N) endorsement at time of appointment and for continued employment.

Other:

Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools.

Fleet Mechanic II - Range 16 $33.64 - $35.92 (DOQ)

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in automotive, construction/heavy equipment, truck, or transit bus repair and maintenance appropriate to specific position.

Substitution:

Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on basis of 125 clock hours of instruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty-four months.

Licensure:

A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes, manual transmissions and with Tanker (N) endorsement at time of appointment and for continued employment.
