GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Temporary full-time Statewide Roadside Communication Technician. This position is critical for maintaining roadside communications for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices and other essential monitoring equipment operated by WYDOT throughout the state. These responsibilities ensure the safety of the traveling public and support efficient operations for multiple programs by allowing for remote monitoring of equipment. This position is essential for ensuring the safety of the traveling public, serving as a key component in traveler information and warning systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • Perform any function in the section and work alongside all positions.

  • Oversee the program standards for statewide training.

  • Plan and perform the technical aspect for which this position is responsible.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to applicants with experience with Wireless radio communication and network design. Preference may be given to those who are WYDOT Tower Climbing Certified.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of contracts and contract administration, including internal WYDOT projects and contracts with outside sources, such as broadband providers.

  • Knowledge of network design, including broadband, radio, fiber and other communication methods.

  • Knowledge of ITS, and traffic control devices.

  • Ability to serve as an expert regarding communications to roadside devices.

  • Ability to provide support to Emergency Communication and ITS technicians.

  • Ability to provide recommendations on contract projects via the WYDOT design process and then see projects through construction, including providing expert inspection and subsequent reports.

  • Knowledge of all devices at the roadside, including those from other departments, to provide a complete end-to-end connectivity solution.

  • Network troubleshooting, monitoring, and implementation are key components of managing network security.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelors Degree (typically in Telecommunications)

Experience:

1- 3 yearsof progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with acquired knowledge at the level of Technical Operations Tech

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Some agencies may require a Class A Commercial Drivers License

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2 - 4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with acquired knowledge at the level of Technical Operations Tech

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Extensive travel is required for this position
  • Ability to climb 200 + foot communication towers
  • Ability to lift 50 + pounds
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
