Job Description Summary

The System Architect is a role in the R&D team that leads the architecture and detailed definition of a specific communications platform (such as the Orbit radio or S20 switch). This is a pivotal role for shaping the platform, requiring a unique blend of system-level thinking, product discovery and technical leadership.

The System Architect collaborates with stakeholders (customers, sales, product managers, technology leadership, etc.) to refine requirements into specific use cases and user stories. They also help development integration by providing system expertise, performance modeling, test planning, and troubleshooting.

The System Architect works across multiple projects, ensuring the detailed requirements and architecture of the platform continue to evolve forward by participating with the project teams through all their technical phases.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Write user-stories and use cases, translate these into clear, detailed requirements for project execution
  • Understand how the product sub-systems come together and identify performance limiting aspects
  • Help define and own the overall architecture of the platform
  • Assist with prioritizing features and functionality
  • Participate in project planning (both long term and sprint planning), ensure alignment of decisions with product goals, customer needs and operational constraints
  • Demonstrate ability to make and communicate high-stakes technical trade-off decisions, balancing time-to-market, cost and long-term/short-term strategy
  • Read and assess customer RFPs and RFIs
  • Help define test strategy, test plans, and review key test results
  • Consult and guide development team, participate in design reviews, code reviews and scrum/status meetings
  • Contribute to the project execution as a development engineer in your area of expertise
  • Work closely with the Product Line to define and prioritize backlog
  • Develop a forward-looking platform strategy to support integration of new technologies and advanced features
  • Participate in product discovery and early prototyping efforts, including field visits when necessary
  • Contribute to product and platform vision and roadmap
  • Contribute to Product Lifecycle Management, i.e. the ability to keep existing product lines up to date to maintain revenue targets
  • Maintain deep awareness of customer operations, usage patterns and maintenance practices to inform platform direction
  • Reviews and has approval authority for ECOs, ensuring the engineering releases meet commitments

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited university or college with at least 5 years of experience in Engineering or Project Management
  • or a Bachelor's degree with at least 8 years of experience in Engineering or Project Management

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with product development - ideally both hardware and software
  • Can operate at a systems/solution level and see how products and services can meet customer needs
  • Experience with networking, wireless communications, and Internet of Things (IOT) is a plus
  • Ability to model and test at a unit test and system level
  • Experience with project planning and work breakdown structure
  • Experience communicating with customers both pre-sales and post-sales
  • Ability to influence and gain commitment at all organizational levels and across functions
  • Ability to act more through influence than authority

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $131,700.00 and $219,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
