Duties:
Under direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, responsible for the handling of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during general to moderately complex surgical procedures. Ensures understanding of the assigned surgical procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the assigned surgeon and surgical team members. Also provides service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, and assisting surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques

Scrubs on complex surgical procedures such as:
Liver & Multi-visceral Organ Transplants
Endovascular Valve Replacement and/or Aneurysm Repair, TeVAR, FeVAR
Cardiac Surgical Team Membership
Ability to scrub cases involving Cardiopulmonary Bypass e. HIPEC

Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon.

Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to type of surgery.

Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs appropriately.

Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards, and reports and corrects non-compliance.

Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments.

May assist RN in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients in the OR

May assist RN in positioning and prepping patients

Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans and stocks rooms, returns equipment and supplies to designated storage locations, helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.

Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patients care and privacy.

Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.

Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and communicates in collaboration with the surgical team

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment standards.

Actively participates in the shared governance/process to promote team practice.

Supports administrative and unit governance changes to job role and unit operations. 17. Participates in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.

Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going department specific educational programs.

Trains/precepts new employees and students in accordance with assigned orientation/curriculum

Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces.

Recognizes and participates in continuing education.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills:
Certifications/Licnesures Required:

Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.
Surgical Technologist certification required or 3-5 years of experience supporting complex high acuity surgical volume, as defined above, in lieu of a certification.

Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program
Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.
