Senior Substation Engineer

Senior Substation Engineer (Contract-to-Hire)
Location: Cary, NC

We are seeking a Senior Substation Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity based in Cary, NC. This role will support substation projects from concept through construction, working closely with project teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions that meet client expectations, budget constraints, and schedule requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Support substation projects from conceptual design through project completion
• Prepare and develop comprehensive substation design packages, including:
  • Physical arrangement (above and below grade)
  • Protection & control (P&C) systems
  • Grounding, lightning protection, lighting, and security systems
• Perform engineering calculations, including:
  • Insulation coordination
  • AC station service and DC system design (including battery sizing)
  • Voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill
• Develop design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, and bill of materials
• Apply knowledge of industry standards such as IEEE, NESC, and utility-specific requirements
• Conduct and support field inspections for substation facilities
• Collaborate with project managers to maintain schedules and meet deadlines
• Participate in QA/QC reviews and perform design quality checks
• Research and compile technical data to support project execution
• Assist with client presentations, reports, and technical visualizations
• Identify and help resolve technical and project-related issues
• Support proposal development and client presentations during the pursuit phase
• Build and maintain strong client relationships

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited program and a minimum of 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred)
  OR
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the FE exam, and a minimum of 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred)

Additional Requirements:

• Internship experience does not count toward required years of experience
• Experience with physical design and/or protection & control (P&C) required
• Strong knowledge of engineering principles and ability to apply them across diverse assignments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities
• Ability to develop innovative solutions to engineering challenges

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
• Professional Engineer (PE) license
