Description Are you passionate about leveraging GenAI to simplify the builder experience and accelerate innovation at Amazon scale? The GenAI Tools & Agentic Ecosystem team is on a mission to make AI agents a natural extension of every Amazon builder's workflow. We build the platforms that let teams create, publish, and discover AI skills and tool integrations - and we enable autonomous agents to tap into Amazon's vast internal ecosystem on behalf of builders. We are part of Amazon Software Builder Experience (ASBX), the organization that provides the tools and platforms every Amazon engineer uses to build, test, deploy, and operate software. This is a rare opportunity to shape how thousands of engineers work with AI. As an SDE III, you will own the technical direction of the infrastructure layer that connects generative AI to the daily work of Amazon builders - from the authentication frameworks that preserve identity across agent-to-service call chains, to the context optimization strategies that determine what agents know and when, to the quality systems that close the loop between observed friction and shipped fixes. You will make architectural decisions with company-wide impact, mentor engineers, and drive ambiguous multi-team problems to resolution. If you want to define how AI agents operate at Amazon scale, this is the role. Key job responsibilities - Own the architecture and technical roadmap for platform services that distribute AI capabilities - skills, agents, and tool integrations - to builders across Amazon - Design authentication and authorization frameworks that enable autonomous agents to securely access internal resources while preserving end-to-end caller identity across multiple auth mechanisms - Architect benchmarking and agent trace analysis systems that measure quality at scale, detect model regressions, and automatically route findings into capability improvements - Drive context optimization strategy - solving how agents efficiently discover and invoke tools without exhausting token budgets, including progressive disclosure, result offloading, and intelligent capability selection - Lead cross-team technical initiatives with partner teams across Amazon and AWS, unblocking adoption and driving alignment on standards for the agentic ecosystem - Set the engineering bar for the team - influencing design reviews, establishing operational excellence practices, and mentoring SDEs on building resilient distributed systems - Make build-vs-buy and prioritization decisions that balance rapid iteration with long-term platform sustainability in a fast-evolving AI landscape Basic Qualifications - 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience - 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience - 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team Preferred Qualifications - 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. About the Company

A

Amazon

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
