Description Most researchers are either qual or quant. You're both. You watch someone struggle with a task and immediately start thinking about how to measure that at scale. You design a contextual inquiry and then triangulate what you observed with large-scale behavioral telemetry and experimentation data, because separating observation from measurement never made sense to you. Millions of people read, write, and take notes on Kindle eReader and Scribe devices. You'll own the research for the software experiences at the heart of how they do it. What you learn will directly shape what we build next. What makes this role different: - You partner with Data Science and BI teams to connect your behavioral findings to journey analytics and product metrics - You bring both qualitative depth (ethnography, usability science) and quantitative rigor (experimental design, statistical analysis) - You influence product strategy at the senior leadership level, not just design decisions - You'll help shape where our research practice goes next Key job responsibilities Design and execute integrated research programs for Kindle eReader and Scribe consumer software experiences that connect qualitative behavioral research (contextual inquiry, usability testing, ethnographic methods) with quantitative measurement (experimental design, statistical analysis, survey validation) within single investigations. Partner with Data Science and Business Intelligence teams to connect behavioral research findings to journey analytics, experimentation frameworks, and product metrics. Identify where qualitative insights should inform quantitative measurement and where data patterns require deeper behavioral investigation. Communicate research findings through compelling narratives that connect customer behavior to business outcomes. Influence product strategy at senior leadership levels by translating complex behavioral data into clear, actionable recommendations. Leverage AI tools for research synthesis and pattern recognition while maintaining critical evaluation of outputs against methodological standards. Partner cross-studio where teams need research that connects behavioral observation to quantitative measurement across Books and Kindle lines of business. A day in the life Your research connects what customers do to why they do it, and what we should build because of it. One day you're watching a customer struggle to find a highlight they saved last week; the next you're working with a BI team to understand whether that friction shows up in journey analytics at scale. You partner daily with product managers, designers, and engineering, and bring insights to design and product leadership across Amazon Books and Devices. The people you're ultimately serving are the readers and writers who rely on Kindle eReaders, Scribe devices, and mobile apps as part of their daily lives. About the team The Books Design Studio Research team works across every surface where customers find, buy, and read books, from storefronts to Kindle eReaders and mobile apps, plus the long-form writing and notetaking experiences unique to Scribe. We turn what we learn into the insights that drive product direction. We are a small, collaborative team that values methodological rigor, intellectual curiosity, and customer obsession. We believe the best research integrates behavioral depth with data-driven measurement, and we're building a practice around that conviction. If you want to do work that matters for millions of readers and writers, this is the team. Basic Qualifications - 5+ years of hands-on work with: field research, ethnography, lab-based user testing, remote testing, paper prototype testing, iterative prototype testing, concept testing, and survey design experience - Experience with behavioral data collection, quantitative data analysis, and statistics - Experience with all aspects of research (study design, recruiting, moderation, analysis, reporting) - Bachelor's degree in HCDE, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or a related field - Experience with the full range of research methods: qualitative and quantitative, attitudinal and behavioral, with deep expertise in one or more areas - Knowledge of statistical analysis - Experience with task-based usability testing using quantitative performance metrics (task completion rates, time-on-task, error rates, or equivalent measures) - Experience partnering with Data Science, Business Intelligence, or analytics teams to connect behavioral research findings to quantitative business metrics Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in Human Factors, HCDE, Cognitive Psychology or equivalent - Experience with UX Research in non-US markets - Experience building measures and metrics, and developing reporting solutions - Familiarity with AI-augmented research tools and workflows for synthesis, pattern recognition, and data analysis, including critical evaluation of AI-generated research outputs against methodological standards - Applied research experience in consumer technology, digital reading, digital writing, or content consumption domains - Experience contributing to research infrastructure: repositories, synthesis frameworks, reusable measurement instruments, or scalable research programs Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. About the Company

A

Amazon

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
