Moore & Van Allen PLLC, a dynamic and fast-growing full-service law firm of more than 400 attorneys and professionals, is seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist to join its Charlotte, NC office. The senior payroll specialist is responsible for the accurate and compliant execution of payroll operations, including payroll processing, tax compliance, reconciliations, and general ledger integration. This role will serve as a subject matter expert and key partner to Finance, HR, and external vendors, ensuring payroll processes are efficient, well-controlled, and aligned with compensation practices and financial reporting requirements.

What You’ll Do:

Payroll Processing & Operations

  • Execute end-to-end payroll processing for multi-state employee populations accurately and on time
  • Manage complex payroll scenarios, including off-cycle payments, bonuses, adjustments, and terminations
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries and issue resolution
  • Maintain and enhance payroll procedures and internal controls

Payroll Tax Compliance

  • Ensure accurate calculation, reporting, and remittance of payroll taxes
  • Partner with third-party vendors on tax filings, amendments, and issue resolution
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement updates to maintain compliance
  • Support internal and external audits related to payroll tax activities

Reconciliation & Financial Controls

  • Perform detailed payroll reconciliations (gross-to-net, tax liabilities, benefit deductions, and clearing accounts)
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of payroll data across systems

General Ledger & Accounting Integration

  • Prepare and review payroll-related journal entries for general ledger posting
  • Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts, including accruals and liabilities
  • Collaborate with Finance during month-end and year-end close processes

Compensation & Workforce Planning Support

  • Partner with Compensation and HR teams to process salary changes, incentives, and other compensation transactions
  • Ensure accurate execution of compensation programs through payroll
  • Provide data and insights to support payroll forecasting and labor cost budgeting

Process Improvement & Compliance

  • Identify opportunities to enhance payroll efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, audit standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain reporting and analytics to support business decision-making

What You’ll Bring:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of payroll experience, including multi-state payroll and tax compliance
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processing, payroll taxes, and reconciliation practices
  • Solid understanding of payroll accounting and general ledger concepts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with UKG or other HRIS/payroll systems
  • Experience supporting payroll budgeting and compensation programs
  • Exposure to system implementations and/or process improvement initiatives

Physical Requirements:

  • The work is primarily sedentary.
  • It requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • The work at times requires bending, squatting, and reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull light weights.
