About the Role:

The Senior Metrology Technician is a hands-on expert responsible for the execution of precision measurement, alignment, and data acquisition using advanced metrology technologies in support of RMS’s rotating equipment field services. This role combines deep technical knowledge of measurement tools with field execution experience to ensure the highest standards of accuracy, repeatability, and traceability. The technician also plays a key role in mentoring junior team members, ensuring tool readiness, and supporting continuous improvement in measurement practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  •
    • 7–10 years of hands-on experience in precision measurement or metrology roles, ideally in rotating equipment or industrial services.
    • Proficient with laser trackers, portable CMMs, and associated software platforms (e.g., SpatialAnalyzer, PolyWorks, CAM2).
    • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), alignment fundamentals, and mechanical fit-up.
    • Excellent technical documentation skills and ability to communicate measurement results to field and engineering teams.
    • Experience mentoring or leading small teams in high-pressure field environments.
    • Willingness to travel extensively, including international field deployments, often on short notice.

Responsibilities:

Advanced Field Measurement Execution

    • Perform precision field measurements using laser trackers, FARO arms, 3D scanners, total stations, and other high-end metrology tools.
    • Set up and execute complex geometric inspections, alignments, and fit-up verifications on turbines, compressors, gearboxes, pumps, and other rotating equipment.
    • Interpret job drawings, OEM specifications, and tolerances to plan and execute field metrology tasks with a high degree of accuracy.

Technical Support and Problem Solving

    • Serve as a go-to expert in resolving field measurement issues, including alignment discrepancies, reference frame challenges, and calibration anomalies.
    • Advise field service teams on optimal measurement strategies based on site conditions and machinery constraints.
    • Conduct real-time analysis of dimensional data to support engineering decisions and job adjustments on-site.

Metrology Software Proficiency

    • Operate and program metrology software such as SpatialAnalyzer, PolyWorks, or FARO CAM2 to build measurement plans and generate reports.
    • Generate 3D models, deviation analyses, and visual documentation to support customer reporting and internal quality records.
    • Maintain templates, scripts, and standard workflows to streamline measurement and reporting processes.

Documentation and Reporting

    • Prepare and submit detailed, traceable reports including raw data sets, CAD overlays, alignment logs, and inspection summaries.
    • Ensure all documentation meets RMS standards and customer requirements for quality, formatting, and archiving.
    • Support digital job reporting and field data upload to RMS databases or customer portals.

Tool Management and Readiness

    • Ensure all metrology tools and accessories are properly maintained, calibrated, and prepared for field use.
    • Oversee tool inventory management, shipping coordination, and spare part availability for assigned regions or projects.
    • Troubleshoot and coordinate repair or recalibration of tools in collaboration with OEM vendors and RMS logistics.

Training and Mentorship

    • Mentor and train junior metrology technicians and field engineers in measurement principles, tool operation, and data interpretation.
    • Support development and delivery of training materials, SOPs, and certification programs related to metrology applications.
    • Act as a field liaison to promote best practices and a culture of measurement excellence within RMS.

Compliance, Safety, and Quality Assurance

    • Follow and enforce all safety procedures related to the setup and use of laser-based equipment and heavy machinery environments.
    • Adhere to industry standards such as ASME, ISO, API, and RMS-specific quality protocols for measurement and alignment.
    • Conduct internal audits of metrology procedures and recommend improvements for accuracy, consistency, and safety.
