Burns & McDonnell is seeking to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our Power global practice in our Denver, CO regional office. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead mechanical design project teams to create world-class designs for both new and existing power generation facilities. These design projects will enhance power production at several types of facilities, including traditional gas generation, simple cycle, combined cycle, reciprocating engines, renewable generation, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, hydro, hydrogen, and energy storage, lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design, procurement, and construction process, adapting mechanical plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

Job Duties:

  • Lead mechanical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.
  • Apply expert knowledge of commonly used mechanical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the mechanical engineering services industry.
  • Calculate size requirements of mechanical equipment and material to develop procurement specifications, lists, datasheets, and drawings.
  • Review mechanical supplier or mechanical contractor quotes, complete technical bid summaries, and write purchase recommendations.
  • Develop mechanical engineering design documents, including design notes, calculations, reports, flow modeling summaries, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, sketches, plan drawings, section drawings, isometrics, pipe supports, datasheets, details, specifications, 3D model routing recommendations, and other related documents.
  • Quality review of mechanical engineering design completed by co-workers.
  • Review mechanical supplier documents for conformance to design specifications, providing documents or drawing redlines as required.
  • Review construction contractor submittals and answer technical requests for information during their procurement and construction activities.
  • Leading site trips for data collection, field inspections, construction review, commissioning support, factory acceptance testing support, or construction support services for both public and private clients.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors, and develop new business opportunities.
  • Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing, and project planning.
  • Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
  • Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates.
  • Report on project performance.
  • Responsible for effective management of engineering scope changes and notice of schedule and budget impacts to the project manager and/or client.
  • Accountable for managing mechanical budget on projects.
  • Provide leadership guidance and instruction to the mechanical engineering practice.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard design solutions.
  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, a plus.
  • 7 years mechanical engineering experience.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) strongly preferred.
  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Additional software skills, including AFT, Fathom, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Smartplant, and other 3D rendering programs, preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
  • Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
  • Ability to travel.

Compensation:

The expected compensation range for this position is $135,000.00 - $210,000.00 per year. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
