Description

Under direct supervision, performs routine and repetitive tasks to maintain and beautify parks, street medians, rights-of-way, facilities, athletic fields, and other Town-owned properties.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates commercial landscape and turf care equipment including line trimmers, tractors, augers, tillers, tree spades, chippers, stump grinders, welders, chain saws, vehicles, and other light to heavy equipment.
  • Plants, cultivates, prunes, and removes trees, shrubs, and flowers; fertilizes, shapes, waters, mulches, and treats vegetation for insects and disease.
  • Applies herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides under the supervision of a licensed applicator; calibrates and maintains spray equipment; interprets labels; and maintains chemical inventory and application logs.
  • Collects and disposes of trash in mowing areas, medians, rights-of-way, and Town facilities.
  • Installs and repairs irrigation systems, including leaks in control lines and piping, controllers, and irrigation heads and valves; performs continuous system checks for proper operation.
  • Assembles, installs, maintains, and inspects playground and park equipment.
  • Performs inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including washing, checking, and servicing.
  • Assists in preparing for special events, athletic tournaments, programs, and Town functions.
  • Prepares flower beds; works in trenches and confined areas; navigates brush or overgrown creek areas.
  • Works safely near high-speed traffic along medians.
  • Assists the Crew Leader in directing and leading work crews, as assigned.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields, including mowing, marking foul lines, installing/removing goal posts, relocating bleachers and benches, and maintaining athletic equipment.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental policies and procedures; informs supervisor of hazards, issues, and public inquiries.
  • May work evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must have valid driver's license. Driving record must comply with Town policy.
  • One (1) year of experience in commercial landscaping, turf care, irrigation systems, equipment operation, or maintenance is required.

  • Must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activities, including exerting up to 100 lbs. of force; lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy equipment (mowers, trimmers, tree limbs, supplies) multiple times per day.
  • Must be able to shovel, crawl, bend, kneel, dig holes for extended periods, climb on and off equipment, and operate vibrating equipment.
  • Must be able to work indoors, outdoors, underground, in trenches, in confined spaces, and on level, uneven, slippery, sloped, unstable, or muddy terrain.
  • Must be able to work in adverse environmental and weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, dust/mist, fumes, chemicals, insects, noxious plants, and snakes.

  • A valid Texas CDL Class "A" or "B" is preferred.
  • Experience leading or directing a work group or team is preferred.

Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities

  • General working knowledge of turf and lawn care practices.
  • Skill in operating small equipment such as line trimmers, chain saws, mowers, and hand tools.
  • Ability to safely use small power tools and equipment.
  • Good hand/foot/eye coordination for operating and repairing equipment and following oral and written instructions.
