Senior Lab Engineer - Device Services Infrastructure

Santa Clara, California, United States Software and ServicesThe Device Services (DS) Infrastructure team is seeking a senior operations engineer who thrives in complex operational environments and can drive strategic change across our lab ecosystem. We manage a fleet of thousands of Apple devices used in a centralized, automated test system which is a critical tool used by engineers developing for iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS. This role acts as a force multiplier, leading cross-functional initiatives that improve how devices are managed, tracked, tested, and scaled across multiple lab sites. You will bridge the gap between lab operations, automation systems, and software services teams to deliver solutions that drive efficiency, visibility, and reliability.DescriptionWe are looking for an operational problem-solver and strategic leader who understands both the technical and human sides of running high-volume test labs. You must enjoy working on multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment that fosters growth, teamwork and innovation.ResponsibilitiesLeading cross-functional projects spanning hardware, software, and operations to align lab workflows with automation systems and engineering needsPartnering with software and automation teams to help us scale effectivelyIdentifying and resolving systemic operational issues in device intake/retirement, inventory health, and lab throughputDriving ongoing workflow improvements across multiple sites (Santa Clara, San Diego, Munich, and future expansions)Developing operational metrics to measure lab performance, device utilization, and process adherenceMentoring engineers and technicians on process optimization and technical troubleshootingPartnering with the Lab Operations Manager to execute high-impact initiativesMinimum Qualifications8+ years of experience in technical operations, systems integration, or large-scale lab/test environmentsStrong understanding of operational workflows from device provisioning and tracking to testing and decommissioningDemonstrated ability to lead ambiguous, cross-functional projects with minimal oversightExperience with scripting or automation tools (Python, Bash, Ansible, or similar)Communication and project management skills across technical and operational audiencesPreferred QualificationsExperience with software services, automation infrastructure, or device farm environmentsFamiliarity with continuous integration test systemsExperience supporting teams with multiple geographic sitesKnowledge of hardware lifecycle management and inventory tracking systemsExperience with macOS, iOS, and other Apple platformsCreative thinker and strong problem solver with meticulous attention to detailAt Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $203,300 and $305,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.
