With almost 40 years of experience, our scalable talent solutions and engineering and sciences services provide the expertise our customers need to achieve more.
Provide technical leadership in the design, specification, integration, and optimization of electrical and control systems for industrial facilities. This role focuses on electrical-based instrumentation, automation platforms, and control strategies that ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams and leads projects from conceptual design through commissioning and long-term support.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of complete instrumentation and controls (I&C) design packages with a strong emphasis on electrical systems, including wiring diagrams, loop sheets, control panel designs, and power distribution related to instrumentation.
- Select and specify electrical instrumentation devices such as transmitters, analyzers, control valves, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and motor control components.
- Design and implement PLC, DCS, SCADA, and HMI architectures for new installations and system upgrades.
- Develop and maintain control system documentation including functional specifications, control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, I/O lists, and network architecture drawings.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant electrical and automation standards and codes such as NEC, NFPA 70/70E, ISA, IEC, IEEE, and applicable industry requirements.
- Serve as the electrical and I&C technical lead on multi-discipline engineering projects, coordinating with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders.
- Participate in and lead design reviews and electrical hazard and risk assessments to promote safety and reliability.
- Support the development of project scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource plans to ensure successful project execution.
- Work closely with equipment vendors, system integrators, and electrical contractors to align designs with project objectives and resolve technical issues.
- Troubleshoot complex control issues involving PLC logic, motor control, instrumentation signals, and industrial networks.
- Optimize control strategies, VFD settings, power monitoring, and instrumentation performance to improve reliability, efficiency, and safety of industrial systems.
- Provide technical support for equipment troubleshooting, failure analysis, and electrical reliability improvements across facilities.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians in electrical systems, instrumentation, PLC programming, and industrial automation best practices, fostering technical growth within the team.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering is required.
- 8+ years of experience in electrical, instrumentation, and control engineering within industrial, manufacturing, energy, utilities, or similar environments.
- Expertise with PLC/DCS systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens, Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell, ABB).
- Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems including low-voltage power distribution, MCCs, VFDs, and electrical protection fundamentals.
- Proficiency with industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet, and OPC.
- Experience developing control logic, HMI screens, system architecture, and instrumentation specifications.
- Strong grasp of electrical drawings: P&IDs, single-line diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, and loop diagrams.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Advanced ability to perform design calculations such as battery sizing, AC and DC loads, system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus bars, fittings, insulators, ground grid design, and lightning protection
- Possess advanced knowledge of standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC and NESC
- Advanced understanding of equipment, material, ordering, and bills of material for substation construction
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Advanced ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment
- Stay abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures, and equipment
