Position Summary:


The Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for partnering with and assisting the Assistant Director of Finance and other senior leadership with the business operations and financial performance of the Institute for Systems Genetics. The Senior Financial Analyst will support various general ledger activities for the Medical Center, including the annual budgeting process, monthly grants reporting, and analysis and forecasting. The Senior Financial Analyst will also build and enhance processes and controls across finance and related accounting supporting system. In addition, the Senior Financial Analyst will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial results and consistency with corporate and business unit accounting policies and procedures and identifying and communicating risks and opportunities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs on-going reporting and analytical projects on an ad-hoc basis and requests by senior management.
  • Manages all facets of the departments financial operations and assures compliance with internal policies of the SOM and regulations of external federal and other granting agencies.
  • Assists in the preparation of departmental annual operating budget.
  • Runs, review, and analyzes financial reports for all faculty and present in a concise and consistent manner. Analysis of the ledgers should ensure all expenses are allowable, allocable, and appropriate to each chartfield.
  • Understands the needs of customers. Works with faculty on specific issues as identified (i.e. incorrect charges, carryover, staffing, deficits, etc.).
  • Meets on a regular basis with faculty to present complex/ comprehensive financial analysis and projections to ensure balanced accounts.
  • Supports the preparation of monthly and year-end financial statements.
  • Reviews general ledger for compliance and accuracy.
  • Serves as a liaison between HR/ Payroll, Finance, and Research Finance departments for all issues.
  • Approves all financial transactions, to thresholds, for each facultys research portfolio to ensure financial compliance.
  • When needed, trains office and technical support staff; determines work priorities and workflow to ensure deadlines are met; coordinates the completion of special projects.
  • Interprets policies and procedures and ensures office operations are in compliance with provisions and standards; facilitates customer satisfaction and adherence to policies.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and a minimum of three to five (3-5) years of accounting experience. Must have a sound understanding of accounting and/or finance and a general understanding of the healthcare industry in order to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position. Strong work ethic, with ability to work extended hours as required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of general ledger, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month end, preferred. Not-for-profit or healthcare experience preferred. Excellent analytical skills combined with strong attention to detail and the ability present complex information in a usable format to a diverse audience. Ability to interpret and apply finance and accounting policies, practices, and systems. Ability to multi-task and work independency in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Strong planning, organization, customer service, and written/verbal communication skills. Proficiency in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams. Computer and Software Skills: Must become and remain proficient in all programs necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities for this role. Knowledge of PeopleSoft is preferred. Strong proficiency with advance Excel including pivot tables and v look up. Microsoft Word.

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
