Description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating and maintaining recycling collection equipment, collecting recycling along assigned route, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Recycling Supervisor and Recycling Administrator.

Examples of Duties

  • Operate a residential recycling collection truck, side-load and/or rear-load truck to collect recyclables on specified collection route.
  • Transport the material to a recycle facility when trucks reach load capacity
  • Safely maneuvers vehicle in residential environments
  • Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service-related issues to Recycling Supervisor
  • Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by supervisor
  • Identify, and tag prohibited items in recycle cart or bin
  • Notifies supervisor of any incidents, accidents, injures, property damage, service interruptions, or truck mechanical issues
  • Communicates customer requests to supervisor
  • Completely dumps all receptacles and leaves the customer's location clean and free of debris
  • Follows route assignments as directed and completes end of day documentation and check out process
  • Performs all duties as scheduled by supervisor and assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in recycling, or solid waste operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment
  • Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a rapid pace
  • Ability to operate automotive equipment safely and effectively
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
  • Ability to read maps
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
