Job Description:

Are you interested in leading complex electrical design projects that support critical infrastructure and make a meaningful impact on communities?

 

At CDM Smith, you will develop and oversee electrical designs ranging from power distribution and facility systems to protection, generation, and renewable energy solutions. You will perform technical studies, guide junior staff, collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and help deliver innovative solutions that meet project requirements and applicable standards.

As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer 6, you will have the opportunity to:

 

  • Using established project goals, develop basic to highly complex electrical designs, including electrical master plans, power systems, protection and generation models, facility power systems, and sustainability and renewable energy systems, to meet client requirements.
  • Review designs for compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and approve completed designs.
  • Perform power system studies and electrical calculations for power distribution, lighting, communications, fire alarm, security, and other electrical systems.
  • Ensure all designs comply with firm policies, procedures, and technical standards.
  • Conduct site investigations and technical studies to verify existing conditions and ensure designs align with site-specific requirements. Revise design criteria and requirements as necessary.
  • Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management program by developing white papers, technical guidance, design documentation, and case studies involving new or specialized designs and studies.
  • Prepare and submit technical papers and designs for publication in industry journals.
  • Collaborate with sales staff to develop proposals in response to client requests for proposals. Review proposals for compliance with firm standards, industry best practices, and applicable regulations.
  • Meet with current and prospective clients to understand and evaluate their present and future design needs.
  • Attend conferences, symposia, and other industry events to enhance the visibility of the firm’s capabilities, products, and services in collaboration with sales staff.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff to support their professional development and advancement within the discipline and firm.
  • May supervise junior engineers and review their project work.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering design principles and project management practices.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis software such as SKM Power Tools or ETAP.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, project teams, vendors, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project scope, schedules, budgets, risks, and financial performance.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • 10 years of related electrical engineering experience.
  • Equivalent directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required depending on project needs, workload, and business demands.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing medium- and low-voltage electrical systems for water, wastewater, industrial, federal, or transit facilities.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary design projects from planning through construction.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, UFC, and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Hands-on experience performing power system studies using SKM Power Tools and/or ETAP.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, staffing, client relationships, and financial performance.

Additional Compensation : All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
