Overview
Reporting to the Deputy Dean or Executive Director, Finance & Administration for the Yale School of Medicine (YSM), the Senior Director, Finance & Administration for the Deans office and Central Administrative units will serve a crucial role in shaping the financial direction of the organization and providing strategic guidance to support long-term growth and success. The Senior Director will develop and implement financial strategies to support the school of medicines portfolio specific to endowments, investment opportunities for growth, including ways to optimize the physical space for research, and provide key, strategic insights into the financial implications of business initiatives.
The Senior Director, Finance & Administration will manage central revenues of approximately $240M and a department operating expense of approximately $180M. The position oversees business operations for approximately 484 staff and 15 faculty. The Senior Director will be expected to provide key strategic and administrative leadership with/for the Deputy Deans and other leadership of the Central Administrative Units. The leader will provide oversight and support of the respective business units and operations, helping to ensure the operations are efficient, sustainable and optimal. This role will oversee a team of business operations staff and the Office of Continuous Improvement and will partner with the Schools FP&A team. The development and documentation of standard operating procedures, performance measurement, tracking and reporting, and staff training and development will be crucial to the success of this position.
This role will be expected to provide impactful business solutions to all facets of leadership, in support of the clinical, research and education missions. The Senior Director, Finance & Administration will be a partner with the Deputy Deans and central administrative unit leaders to plan and direct the strategic agenda, program and policy and development and operational planning for the departments, including all administrative functions and operational affairs of the respective departments.
Required Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and supporting program development, professional education and medical research in an academic environment. Demonstrated success in supporting medical research with the ability to effectively identify opportunities for improvement in support functions.
Demonstrated success in creating, executing, and monitoring strategic plans to achieve established goals for a group of academic physicians/scientists. The ability to build consensus across a diverse set of section leaders and navigate the needs of multiple stakeholders.
Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and supporting program development, professional education and medical research in an academic environment. Demonstrated success in supporting medical research with the ability to effectively identify opportunities for improvement in support functions.
Exceptional analytic and communication skills with the ability to concisely communicate complex findings to a variety of key groups. A proven ability to efficiently manage multiple high priority projects and delegate appropriately. Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities or threats and apply effective management principles to achieve success.
Consistently strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with professionals in other disciplines. The ability to create a high energy results-oriented work environment that encourages colleagues and staff to value each others contributions. The ability to share and celebrate success with colleagues and staff.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
7-10 years experience in a healthcare environment and demonstrated success in managing complex programs. Proven track record as a strategic leader with experience implementing value-added initiatives. Experience working across a complex health system with both academic and community hospitals. Master's degree preferred. Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
