Job DetailsWe are seeking an experienced insurance defense attorney to oversee complex commercial automobile and property and casualty litigation. This attorney will provide strategic legal guidance to claims professionals, manage outside counsel and third-party administrators, and develop resolution strategies for high-exposure matters.
The ideal candidate has significant experience with commercial automobile and trucking claims and can balance legal risk, financial exposure, regulatory requirements, and business objectives.
Responsibilities
- Oversee litigated commercial automobile, trucking, and property and casualty claims
- Develop litigation, settlement, and resolution strategies for complex and high-exposure matters
- Manage and evaluate outside counsel, third-party administrators, experts, and other litigation vendors
- Ensure compliance with litigation management guidelines, reporting requirements, budgets, and case-handling standards
- Review case evaluations, litigation plans, reserve recommendations, settlement proposals, and significant pleadings
- Advise claims leadership and examiners regarding liability, damages, coverage, litigation risk, and potential exposure
- Provide guidance on commercial automobile and property and casualty policy interpretation
- Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, hearings, regulatory proceedings, and other legal matters as needed
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments affecting insurance claims and operations
- Evaluate the impact of new laws, regulations, and court decisions on claims-handling practices
- Collaborate with claims leadership to improve litigation procedures, escalation standards, and internal best practices
- Identify litigation trends and opportunities to reduce exposure, improve outcomes, and control legal expenses
- Provide legal guidance and training to internal claims professionals and business stakeholders
Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school
- Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar
- At least eight years of experience practicing insurance defense litigation
- Significant experience with commercial automobile, trucking, transportation, or complex casualty claims
- Experience handling large-loss, catastrophic injury, wrongful death, or other high-exposure matters
- Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance claims and policy interpretation
- Experience developing litigation strategies and managing outside counsel
- Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, and communication skills
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with an insurance carrier, claims organization, or third-party administrator
- Familiarity with state insurance statutes, regulations, and administrative proceedings
- Experience managing litigation across multiple jurisdictions
- Trial, mediation, arbitration, or regulatory hearing experience
Skills
- Strong judgment and the ability to provide practical, business-focused legal advice
- Ability to analyze complex legal, factual, medical, and financial issues
- Strong outside counsel and vendor management capabilities
- Ability to communicate effectively with claims professionals, executives, regulators, and other stakeholders
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple high-priority matters
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across legal, claims, compliance, and operational teams
